Fitted a new heat lamp tonight and thought some might find it useful... What you need 1 ceramic or infrared bulb 2 bulb fitting,ceramic/porcalin bulb fitting for ceramic heaters (plastic ones will melt with ceramic heaters) 3 2 core power cable (heat resistant)and plug long enough from viv to stat 4 thermostat, preferbly dimming or pulse prop for ceramic heaters 5 most imortant, protective cage for bulb 6 cordlees drill/small electrical screwdriver
start by drilling a appropiate size hole for the 2 core cable to enter the viv.
Then before connecting to the bulb fitting thread it through a hole in the bulb cage and then connect.
Then fix in place at the warm end of the viv.try and keep the unsheathed wire as short as poss, did go back and trim these up but no pic
Connect the bulb then fix the gaurd in place.
Lastly postion thermostat probe under lamp, you can have this lose on top of substate or fix it as i have.
plug the bulb into the socket from the stat, place thermometer next to thermostat probe, fire it up and adjust stat accordly.
Jobs a good un,even for the ladies
I am not a electrician,This is just a guide,i accept no responsability for accident, loss, injury or death

Nice Lee, just one thing, you only need the porcelain bulb holder with ceramic bulbs, infrared are fine with plastic holders as they don't get anywhere near as hot. |

Thanks BE,did'nt know that,i have edited it.they were cheap enough at maplins though, rep shop wanted over a tenner. It's made monty a very happy snake,he was out for hours last night instead of being in and out all night and a lot more active, only thing is the corn's looking a bit jealous |

Earth is not really needed unless there is metal parts attached.
I would recommend that you use heat rated cable for ceramic heaters though. its the stuff used on emersion heaters. has a very high temp rating so wont burn.
And no it doesnt matter which way round they go in lamp holders. |

I'm pretty sure that because it's only 2 core cable, you don't need an earth, the same with heat mats I think. |

Mine's got an earth wire, but, of course, there is nowhere to connect it. And it does bother me a bit... It seems very odd that some of these fittings come with a 3 wire cable, but there is nowhere to connect the earth wire... |

And what is that supposed to mean? Are you talking female snakes or female women and, if so, why?
