Howdy folks,
Doing some re-arranging in my viv and want to introduce a clay pot hide to the hot and cool end of the enclosure. Regarding the pot, I understand that the Royal should fit snug into the pot, I have also read that they will prefere the entry/exit point to be through the "top" of the upside down pot as appossed to cutting an arch way out on the side of the pot. Is this benificial and important or does it really matter?

If you think about the Exo Terra hides you can buy, they all have entrances in the side. |

I cant seem to find an Exo big enough though to be honest for my girl, hence the clay pot jobbie. It is just that I read on a care sheet that entrance/exit is preferred through the top of the upside down pot. I guess it aint a show stopper regardless though.

Hi Paulie, We have home made pot hides, for our corns and king (The Royal has Exo ones)The corns and king love them, they have arches cut in the side which I cut with a tile saw. Don't think the snakes mind if it's in the top or not, as long as it's small enough to just fit the snake and not overly large.
Here's a link to a ours on thecornsnake forum:

Excellent Lewy and thanks for the link. I will give it a bash tonight, only thing is I dont have a tile saw. Wonder would a junior hacksaw do the trick, I'll give it a go regardless and post back.

Cool, I'll swing by B&Q on the way home and see if I can pick one up. Have to nip in there anyway for the flower pots. Cheers |

I started of with upside down flower pots for my royal as i was told they like them cos of the top entrance/exit. I dont use them now though cos i find that my royals tend to poop in their warm hides and they are not as easy to clean as the exo-terra ones.
When mine grow out of their current hides i am gonna try using large pieces of cork bark instead of proper hides cos the ones i use as cold hides in my royals vivs and warm hides in my corns vivs they seem to love. also a large piece of cork bark is loads cheaper than a exo-terra extra large hide. |

OK Folks, found a nice pot and the tile saw. I cut it out and have it sat in in there now. She seems very happy with it and is in there as I type. The bit that Dazb mentions above though re the poop is a concern. Anyone else have this problem?

It does come off, you can scrub terracotta in hot water without any problems, The Exo terra ones the colour comes off if you scrub it.
Depends on if your royal likes to go in the hide or not, some are that shy they stay in to poop Scruffy sods! |

If you ever want to play with making your own hides, try these. I made some with my kids and it's super easy and super cheap and very pretty on a viv. I'm not sure about the longevity of the hides after washing. We've only had ours a few days. http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77863
