The snake is 5 years old, about 2.5-3 feet long. He's in a smaller viv at the moment with the current owner, but they haven't been feeding it correctly (that's a whole other topic!) so we thought we'd get him settled into a bigger home that he'll never outgrow. I know they like to feel secure so, as well as the hide he currently has, we're going to get some other bits for him to hide in.

In that case I'd go for a lamp, they are recommended when housing larger, heavier bodied snakes.

2.5-3ft sounds quite small for a 5 year old, if I'm correct?

Yes, he's being fed on rat pups.....A whole other topic unfortunately.....

So just a red lamp is good then? What wattage should the bulb be? Is the heatmat just a waste of money then, money tht can be better spent on a decent thermostat?

Questions questions! Thanks for all the answers!

a red lamp is fine...if your going for a red lamp you need a dimmer stat...

Great. Any idea how much a dimmer stat is?

Sorry, just to bring it up again, what wattage?

wattage doesnt really matter. a dimming stat will only use a fraction of wot the lamp is.

it will only run at full power to get to temp then will 'dim' down to maintain the temp.

i have got a 250w ceramic for a 3 foot viv. only because it is the same price as a 150w and is only using a fraction of its wattage so sould prolong its life.

i think BE uses 75w for his 3 foots.

prices vary... depends on if its a habistat or a microclimate...
