| The snake is 5 years old, about 2.5-3 feet long. He's in a smaller viv at the moment with the current owner, but they haven't been feeding it correctly (that's a whole other topic!) so we thought we'd get him settled into a bigger home that he'll never outgrow. I know they like to feel secure so, as well as the hide he currently has, we're going to get some other bits for him to hide in. |

In that case I'd go for a lamp, they are recommended when housing larger, heavier bodied snakes.
2.5-3ft sounds quite small for a 5 year old, if I'm correct? |

Yes, he's being fed on rat pups.....A whole other topic unfortunately.....
So just a red lamp is good then? What wattage should the bulb be? Is the heatmat just a waste of money then, money tht can be better spent on a decent thermostat?

a red lamp is fine...if your going for a red lamp you need a dimmer stat...

wattage doesnt really matter. a dimming stat will only use a fraction of wot the lamp is.
it will only run at full power to get to temp then will 'dim' down to maintain the temp.
i have got a 250w ceramic for a 3 foot viv. only because it is the same price as a 150w and is only using a fraction of its wattage so sould prolong its life.
i think BE uses 75w for his 3 foots.
prices vary... depends on if its a habistat or a microclimate... |
