first i would like to say Sorry if this upsets anyone But thinking of doing the fresh killed method been looking in to Co2 chambers which i think is the best way for rodents to go. Does Co2 harm royals and could i feed my Royals straight after gassing them or would i have to wait 24 hours or something first???

Cheers Danny

Unless you're doing it in large quantites its probably easier to break their necks.

If using CO2 then get the levels right as too much can be poisonous, rather than just sending them to sleep and suffocating.

I looked into breaking there necks but thought what happends if you dont break it first time.Thats why i was looking at Co2 chambers they are easy to make and cheap to build and run but can i feed them straight away after gassing??? and i would be doing bulk aswell

I have been reading a topic on this and according to what i read you can feed straight away as co2 is a natural gas and is only dangerous if inhaled not eaten,i copied and pasted this,as it might help

"you have to start by getting roughly 8% of the air in the tub as c02. you have to judge it crefully, 4 seconds on slow is normally ok, but just watch the mouse behaviour, you will be able to tell, once they have "fallen asleep" leave it for about 15 seconds, and then pump in the co2. i would say 5 seconds with the tap on medium/fast is ok. then leave for about 2 minutes observing to make sure that none of the mice are breathing, atall. then straight in the freezer, or to the snakes they go.

p.s make sure you put some sort of substrate in their, they empty their bladders when they die, so it does get messy."

I think neck braking is more humane. If you dont get the ratio of CO2 to normal air, the mice will suffer alot.

There are methods I've seen floating around forums that are pretty good at breaking the necks in one swift hit.
Can't remember where I saw them exactly but I'm sure a quick google would do the trick.

The gassing is better in some ways but I don't think it's going to be easy to build a chamber yourself and get the ratio perfect.

I did see a vid on youtube about breaking necks, all done in good taste. It showed to lace mouse on table and hold by the base of tail and pin down by the neck with other hand and pull and it was all over, seem very humane and quick,i would rather do that than gasing.
If i could find the vid again would i get attacked for posting the link

No no... it's harder to break their necks and MUCH MUCH easier to let them sleep.

Okay, I raise my own rats so I have experience with this. If you're only doing a few, the easiest way is to get a ziploc freezer bag (the freezer bag is thicker than the regular storage ones). Then get a Compressed Air Duster used to clean keyboards with. It uses CO2. You should be able to find these at your local office supply store. I'm in the US, so I get mine from Office Depot. A 4-pack 10oz cans is only $10 and one can goes a long way.

Anyway, put the rats in the ziploc bag - you can fit 3 rats in a quart-size, more for the gallon size. Zip the top leaving a teeny bit of an opening to stick the air duster nozzle through. Spray 3 spurts of gas into the bag, more if you have more rats, while holding the bag upright. CO2 is heaver than air, so it sinks to the bottom where the rats are. It takes less than 5 seconds for the rats to sleep. Leave them in the bag for at least 2 more minutes. If you take them out too soon they will wake up!

It's really very easy. I can't bop a rat in the head. These are my pets too and letting them go to sleep is much easier for me to do. By the way, in all the time I've been gassing rats, I haven't had one spill its guts yet.

If you're wanting to gas a lot of rats at one time - like 50 or so - it is more economical to just make the "chamber". My friend uses a styrofoam cooler and a paintball or bb gun canister. I have step by step instructions if you need it.

Oh, and one more thing... gassing won't work on pinkies. I guess they are designed to be able to hold their breaths for a long long time having to stay under a rat pile and all that.

P.S. You can feed a freshly gassed rat straight to your snake. It's preferrable since they're still warm and all that.

If the rats don't sleep in under 5 seconds, you didn't spray enough CO2 in. Mine are usually asleep in 3 seconds flat.

Sorry, I thought I was on the corn snake forum. I assumed it was mice, I wouldnt try and break a rats neck, they seem a bit sturdy if you get me. Anatess's method sounds good.

You want to do it slowly though so that they just go to sleep rather than poisoning?

If they don't sleep within 5 seconds, they don't sleep at all and you'll have to add more CO2. If it takes the whole 2 minutes to get them to sleep, they didn't sleep because of the CO2, they got suffocated by the ziploc bag. Not good.
Basically, when they sleep within 5 seconds, they are completely unconscious but not dead yet. If you let them air out immediately after, they will wake up after a minute or two as if nothing has happened. So, basically what I'm doing is letting them die in their sleep.

I'm not saying it's bad to bop a rat in the head. Truly. I'm completely ok with that. It's just that, my own personal take on the matter is that the CO2 is easier for the rat and me. Kinda like the gas chambers versus electric chair for the death row inmates, ya know. Probably not a good juxtaposition... but close enough to what I'm trying to say.

Just a random thought, but when I used to be into fishing, you used to get a thing, I think it was called a priest, for bashing fish on the head to kill them, would this work for rats?

Not that I'm going to be doing fresh killed, frozen is just easier, but I just wondered if it would work.

It was pretty much just a wooden stick with a big brass ball on the end.

Yeah people still use a priest it can be done that way but Co2 chamber has got to be the best
