hi guys just thought i would share a problem i have just encounted.

i am just installing 250w ceramics in my newly built viv stack, each one is seperatly stated and was just having a dry run to see if everything was ok before i moved the snakes to their new homes.

the problem i had was, that because i had screwed the porcelain fitting to the roof of the lower viv(the floor of the above viv) the heat from the ceramic in the lower viv was transferring alot of heat to viv above.

the floor of the upper viv reached 45*C with its own ceramic turned off before i had to turn everything off and call chaz at Snakes'N'Adders to ask for some advice.

hopefully to solve this problem is to get hanging porcelain fittings as to stop the heat transfering to the upper viv.

just thought i would share this info as i know afew people are using/looking to use cermaics in there vivs and if they are thinking about stacking them.

this also hightlights the fact that you need to set up your viv and get everything right before putting your snakes in there.

cheers...

Nice one Daz.

Mine are on a shelving system with a 2" air gap between them. The ceramics in both vivs are at the same end too. Just means that the top ceramic doesn't have to work as hard.

I'll keep an eye though just in case my cunning plan doesn't work .

I found that out as well, had to move my King Snake from on top of peanuts viv cos it was to hot..

thanks for the info on how to stop it as well;-)

Just a thought though, would a reflector work? i have seen these but not sure if you need special fittings to use them

im not sure about a reflector. its something i gotta look into cos i dont wanna have to buy new guards if the hanging fittings hang to low.

i think the air gap will work well and will prob solve the issue ive got.

couldnt believe how hot it got...

one of my cats is always sitting on either Oscar or Queenie's RUBs, fortunately they're used to it and quite chilled out!

Thats good to know Daz, I'm doing the ceramic thing.

Might have to space the viv above up a bit.

Cheers for letting us know, is it worth getting guards a few inches taller then for a hanging fitting?

i think its is only a real problem, and you have to use the hanging ones when using the larger heaters.

will let you know how i get on tomorrow when i go to S'n'A...

AHS are generally mounted on the side of the Viv, unless you have vivs next to each other it will be fine in a stack.

I get this with the infrared lamp too,i use the heat thats coming throught to heat my corns vuanarium, instead of a mat,i just put some 20mm spacers inbetween the viv and vaun to get the right temp and it works a treat, temps have been spot ot since i did it.
