I see I am not the only one with this problem. Mines not eaten for 9 weeks now!!!
I have gone and got him a chick and a gerbil today and will try them.
Gerbils are not cheap! No wonder no one feeds their snakes solely on these!
If that fails the local reptile store owner is going to make him eat! Hope it dosn't resort to that though.

Sigh...he was such a good feeder when I got him.

If that means force-feeding I'd rather live feed first myself.

Do you have African Soft-Fur rats in Britain? There is no official research done on it but there have been plenty of royal owners that have successfully fed problem eaters using ASF rats.

Snake owner since Oct 2008, so yeah, I'm no expert.

I am not sure what methods he has planned but he's a very experienced and well respected herpetologist so I am sure he will do what he thinks is right. Lets hope neither strategy is needed.

Fernando, too, has been picky with his food recently . There certainly appears to be a lot more royals being fussy at the moment, which I find reassuring, as it supports the theory of winter changing their eating habits. Last time and tonight he wouldn't strike, as he usually does, but ate it after being left along in the feeding box with it for a while.

Mine ate a chick tonight. I had a gerbil in reserve as well but will save that. I am going to try again in a week with a chick/mouse.

ASF = multimammates!

That's what I breed because it doesn't stink like mice or rats.

Lots of royal owners in the US with picky eaters have switched to them. But, they are illegal in some states like Texas and Georgia!

Something to do with foreign species wrecking havoc to local wildlife. They will thrive in Texas and Georgia weather and if they ever get out into the wild, they can multiply very very fast.

I have 1 male and 2 females and I average about 24 rat babies every 3 weeks.

I'm learning a lot on this forum... I mean, it took me a while to get used to saying royal instead of ball python.

Hi, if its any consalation, I have been trying to get Gladyssssssss onto rats, which, she did take a couple of weeks ago no problem. She nearly dived out of the viv/feeder box, but i did warm it up in front of the viv, so the smell wafted over to the viv from the hairdryer. She showed an interest and stuck at it immeadiatley. The rat had a small hole in the head.
However, this week she decided to ignore the rat completely and no matter what i did she wasnt going to strike for it. I dropped it a couple of times and she moved around the viv/feeding box and wouldnt go anywhere near it.
After an hour and getting very frustrated, I put her back in her viv and she seemed disgusted that she had not received any dinner after being in the feed box. I was then stuck with a rat that i didnt know what to do with, so i threw it in the viv, and it landed near where she sleeps, behind a log. Within 5mins she was eating the rat!!!!!
Fussy or what?
Whilst speaking to the owner of our repitle shop and discussing the weaning off mice onto rats, she said that one of her royals went for one year without eating - so should we be concerned???
It's just something for you to bear in mind.
