I think they can, I saw a thread on the dark side ages ago with a guys whos snake died (cant remeber what it was, it was a colubrid). There was a huge bump in it and when he disected it there was a mass within the snake.

absolutely not Peanut, is the kingsnake...when he went into Richard's rescue he had a lump on him the guy that took him in said it was a bite, this poor snake has had a terrible shed, and is off to the vets tomorrow, i found the post on the other side, but it is not as big so i am hoping it is a cyst or something it is internal, Richard does not really know any history other than the guy said to him it was a bite.

What do i do if after tests it is a tumour? he is apparently an old snake, but i dont have a clue how you could possibly tell this?

Seen it BE, that was so sad, where that snakes lump was is around the same place as Indy's it could be a cyst, guess i should wait till the morning and see what the vet says..second guessing is bad for the heart..

How big is the lump? Before I got my corn she had a lump on the side of her body level with her vent. This was drained of fluid by the vet and hasnt been a problem since, however there is still a visable raised area.

(were talking about a king snake right?)

wow! i'd not seen that post on the dark side BE
unfortunately they can get tumours. depending on the site they can sometimes or not be a problem unless they get to a substantial size. definitely a vet job
btw, where abouts is the lump?

Dumerils boas, BCO hybrids, Sinder Hypo boas, cornsnakes, ratsnakes, Day Geckos

I'm running out of things to cross Anne . Hope the king is ok too. Just gotta see what the vet thinks.

Interesting thread Piers/Matt. Love the instruments he used.

Why did I spend out on this when I could have gone to Hobbycraft .

there is another post over there that actually shows a vet doing an op removing a growth, then more coming back...it is very interesting. That was a kingsnake as well..

Paulus, i gave up fostering sick animals cos i could not handle them dying on me..it is easy to love them and care for them, but not easy when they die on you or have to be pts...never thought it would happen with snakes, but i knew that this one was not the best hence i offered it a home..

I will see what happens tomorrow, i am guessing it will be x rays and then tests if neccessary, he is such a darling, i feel really sad for animals when they get sick.

GP the lump is around three to four inches up from his vent.

Abcesses are hard arent they?

Another interesting thread.

Is that King the same, or similar, morph to the one in the other thread? Just wondering if that morph possibly genetically predisposed to developing tumours? Just wondering if the 2 snakes are related. If so might be worth stopping that pair of parents breeding.

Sorry. My fault. Just re-read my last post and it was as clear as mud.

If both snakes are related to each other, from the same family somewhere along their family tree, was what I meant to say. That's what's worrying. If that morph carries genes that make it more likely to develop tumours is it worth continuing breeding that particular line?

thats a worthy thought, i think it is only a matter of time before cancers and the like become more prevalent in snakes, it has happened with other species.

GSD's have suffered terribly the last fifteen years, week hips, cdrm and loads of stuff from inbreeding. There genes got weaker and weaker...and they are not the only breed suffering.

I know morphs and stuff are beautiful, but nature never really intended for us to mess with stuff, and we continually do it...

I think that second thread was much more educational and tactful than the first.
