Princess is due at the vets next week for a check up, however as she spends all day in her hollow log we may have a problem persuading her to come out. I don't want to just reach in and pull her out because if she's frightened she's just going to hold on in there.

Any suggestions? I did think of just putting the log into a bag, transporting her still in it, and letting the vet try and extract her but it doesn't sound ideal.

Get up at 3:00 the morning before and remove the log whilst she's out of it.

You just have to be gentle. How tight is the log? Can you get your hand in it?

Usually if you put your hand in one end and tickle them, they make for the other exit quite sharpish

Have you got an air compressor? Either that or you could apply the same principles as a potato bazooka. Do you own some wicket keeper's gloves or do you need to borrow some?

I usually poke Sherman's tail and he legs it out the other end of his log .

There's plenty of room for me to get my hand into the log, so trying to encourage her out of the other end could be an option. I may give that a try a few days in advance and if that doesn't work camp out in the living room until she's out of the log and then nick it. I didn't want to remove the log really, but it's just occurred to me that we have a shoebox that could serve as a temporary hide.

Daz: I did consider holding the log vertically and shaking it but thought that she'd probably not be best pleased!

Your cruel GP- I never see Jally and Casper because they are tube dwellers, but I wouldn't take away the love of their life

I do get to see Princess, but unless she's being fed it's usually only her head poking out of one end of the log. To see her properly I need to wait until midnight-ish and then sit in the dark when she usually comes out.

Paulusworm: I somehow missed your post yesterday, but it made me laugh!

The grand plan is to try and poke her gently and see if she makes a run for the other end (although my money is on her either balling up and wedging herself in or giving me a nip!) and if that fails replace the log with the shoebox until she's been to the vet.

Is it possible for a reptile to look smug? This evening I have tried poking her from behind to try and encourage her to scoot out of the other end, hooking my finger through a coil and pulling her out and tilting the log at an angle propped up on the other hide. In all instances she obstinately stayed put. The log is quite rough inside so it's easy for her to get a grip on, and I can't pull / push her too much in case I hurt her. After a few minutes of failed attempts she was still curled up with her head poking out and looking very pleased with herself.

So it's onto plan B, wait up as late as needed until she comes out of her own accord and then swipe the log and replace it with the shoebox. Little sod.

Waiting up the night before worked, her log was swiped and replaced with the shoebox. Being a contrary sort, she had a cursory sniff, stuck her head inside and then decided that she didn't like it and retreated to the other end of her viv. By the looks of it she spent the night draped over her other hide looking dejected, as she was still there in the morning.

Upon her return from the vet she had a joyful reunion with her log and has not budged from it since!

Good job!

I had my western hognose stubbornly stay put in his rock cave once. I pulled him gently but he grabbed on to the rock. I was in a hurry since I was running a bit late for the vet appointment, so I went ahead and took the hide with him in it and put them in the critter keeper. I made the vet "tickle" him out of it.

Yep. That's about the peak. The spirit of Sid James and the Carry-On team is strong here
