Hi,
Everytime my Royal is going to shed I replace his moss with fresh , moist stuff, and keep it moist by misting it. He has a water bowl in there all of the time obviously, and the humidity gauge reads about 80 - 90%.
HOWEVER,
Everytime he sheds there is always some left on him somewhere! Luckily never his eye caps, but its never complete. Also, there are normally lots of little bits left in the viv. Its just like it was too dry conditions in his viv but it never is??
Any ideas how I can make it a bit better for him??
Many thanks x |

no expert so better off waiting for someone else but the humidity seems a bit high (?) have u tried giving him a bath? if not, : fill the bath with water no deeper than his body, about the same temp as the warm end of his viv/rub, let him swim around for about 20-30 mins then let him run through a clean towel. worked wonders for my baby ^_^ if you have done that, someone else will answer more fully for you. :) |

Hi Kay, what is you set up like? i.e- temps? etc...
are you using a dial humidity thingy? they are not really accurate, after advice from GP i only use mine as a guide as she says if it was to fluctuate a lot i would know something was wrong.
My snake keeps moist by going in his moss box (margarine tub), i make sure this is always moist for him, is your moss in a box?
You should not really need to mist if you have a moss box..that should be enough..
Has he got plenty of things to help him shed? ie cork bark and the likes? |

as per wolfspirit's reply really, the sphagnum moss should be damp but not wet enough to wring water out of, it shouldn't need misting unless it's in the warm end of the viv. and 10-15 mins in the bath is usually long enough in the bath as the water gets cold quite quickly. |

You can bath for 30 minutes to an hour if needed. Sometimes, this is needed for poorly sheds. You put tepid water in a plastic "tupperware-type" container with the snake's back just peeking out of the water. Put the lid on and put the entire thing in his viv to maintain temps. |

Just a question, if you were to put it in his viv near a heat source would the water get to warm? especially if it was a cheap plastic tub, they dont do so good with heat anyways do they? |
