Grrrr, just found out why my male Fire has been off his food recently, found mites on him!
Really gutted, its my first occurence. Can only think they came with him as eggs.
Will start the warfare on them tomorrow! |

Good luck and let battle commence on the little buggers . Any chance of some pics as a guide on what to look for for those of us that have yet to have the pleasure? Physical appearance of the snake, etc. |

I haven't got a camera that would pick them up, but a friend might have.
Like I said, he had been off his food recently, he has been looking dehydrated (slightly sunken eyes) and has been seen bathing in his water bowl a fair bit. That was how I first noticed them, the small black specs in the water. |

That would be a good sticky...
i got a good tip from Pauline about mites and it worked for her..
She sprayed the viv with Ardap and then got a square smallish piece of newspaper soaked it with Ardap and when everything was ready to go back on the viv she put the bit of paper in a corner and apparently mites are attracted to the smell and when they go onto the newspaper it kills them. |

well i dont know, but she said she sprays it onto a piece of paper, obviously it is dry and leaves it in for s day or two and it kills any mights that might have been missed... |

Pretty sure they came with him, all the others are on the same substrate from the same sack. |

normal incubation for mite eggs is about 3 weeks but i'm pretty sure they can lurk undetected for much longer then hatch out unexpectedly! |

I've had them about 6 weeks now I think. They may well have started hatching a week or 2 ago as I haven't really handled them much as they are not feeding regularly yet so I could have missed the onset.
Anyway, Mart has been round tonight helping me start the battle and has taken some excellent photos for a future guide. |

Be are these royals in tubs or vivs?..but then they could still get out of tubs, are you going to have to do all your snakes or are they seperated from the others? |
