So I've gotten the urge to buy another tarantula lately, I think I didn't give the first one a good try and quit when it got scary.
But I'm not in the habit of buying and selling animals willy-nilly so I've decided to NOT buy another tarantula, but instead try and construct an ant colony :) I've been reading up on them and they sound pretty simple but I don't want to spend any real money on it so going to try and DIY it again! (Besides, breeding crickets and mealworm for the hedgheog and the cresties leaves a lot of surplus insects so it would just be rude not to have something else eat them!)
I want to try and make this using all old materials, naturally I can make the bulk of it with a fish tank but I do however need something to make the breeding chambers (which will be the traditional ant farm style you all know (long slender glass panes together) it's this that I'm struggling to think of how I can make it! I don't want to go out and buy two pieces of glass because that defeats the point of trying to do it cheap but I can't think of anything that would work in a similar way!
Any ideas? :) |

i assume it need to be see through so you can see whats going on?
what about some sheets of clear plastic? or see if you can find some glass thats being thrown out/given away.
or you could get yourself a scorpion, mine bothers my much less that the tarantula |

| Might be a bit much yeah. Check out your local charity shops for any tables or small cupboards/cabinets with glass doors. |

If it doesn't need to be see-through you could use Correx? It's cheap enough and you can get it in different colours (I use it to make play pens for the pets amongst other things). You can also get it in clear, but it just wouldn't be crystal... then again I don't think anything will be for very long!
The charity shop sounds a good idea. Ours often sell coffee tables with glass tops and things like cabinets etc. You can get the less atractive ones for cheap enough.
The only other thing I can think of right now is going to a frame-makers. They might be able to sell you some off cuts, but that might not be so cheap. |

| ant farm! i used to have an ant farm, it was hypnotising watching them do their thing. the hardest part is making them escape proof which is why i bought the ones i had. catching enough of them to stock it is a bit time consuming aswell... but well worth it just for something to watch other than the tv. |

The piece you've got left over from Pandoras viv could be used if you can get back to where ever you bought it from as I'm sure they would re-cut it for you, and I'm even more sure you could talk them into doing it for free lmao, or maybe see if there are any building works going on near you, and see if they are throwing any double glazed units out if so grab one and take the jointing tape off one side, just a thought...  |
