We went to the vets a while back and it's just occured to me something very odd happened that I didn't quite realize.

I think the vet's may be the only place in the world where they do a procedure first and then ask for money after without any indication before-hand how much something is going to cost. I know a check-up is about £30 at our vets but the medcine bills and such are beyond me, so when I go in with a problem, the vet does his business and then I come out to be asked for over £100, on the spot, just the like... Seems rediculous, it was lucky I had just sold a baby royal or I'd literally not be able to pay. Why doesn't the vet warn you before he sticks that £100 needle into the snake?!

That's been a topic of mass discussion over the years. I always ask how much treatments cost and what it is they're using, normally because I can get the tablets for my dog for a fraction of the cost from where I work

That's lucky, I think I'm going to start asking beforehand now because that was a real shock to the system I think I've spent over £200 on vet bills on this now and It's getting to the point where I'm starting to think I'm just paying for his mistakes, baytril didn't work, that's a shame, but it's also like £60 I've paid because you can't diagnose whats wrong with my snake >.<

We've had this with cats... what are you going to do even if you ask beforehand? Get a second opinion? Not treat it? It's all a bit tricky. We actually elected NOT to treat our cat's mysterious weight loss. We'd already paid hundreds to get nowhere, further tests would've been phenomenally expensive and quite likely inconclusive, so we decided to take him home and love him for the time he had left.

He got better on his own.

No fortunately they didn't charge the consultation fee again. Although I'll admit when Pandora first gave birth there were a few there I was worried about so took three to the vets, one needed his eye removed the other two had kinks which were perfectly fine, I got charged for all 3 snakes despite two of those being literally 15 seconds of him saying "ah it's just a kink nothing to worry about, sometimes happens" the cheek!

Yeah it's crazy they don't run it by you at all, it's just insanity to assume that somebody will walk in with £100 in their pocket not even knowing if there is a problem xP

Same with the dentists, they stick you with needles and do what they are doing, your mouth is numb so you dont actually know what it is they are upto and then you hand them your debit card to take care of the bill that they calculate using wizardry.

I once had an emergency with my dog, he basically was playing fetch and he slit his wrist on something, came running back ball in mouth with blood spraying out of him like a fountain. I drove to the vets holding the wound closed walked into the surgery looking like an extra from a slash film, the vet was straight out and saw him straight away. Staples, pain medication, antibiotics and 7 return visits for redressing and three times for restapling, was £290 in the end, he was insured but I decided the increase in premium would cost far more so paid cash.

It is a lot of money to shell out and when I actually think of what was done it was expensive but then I remember that £290 saved my dogs life and it suddenly doesn't seem so expensive.

When I took Ra to the vet for his not eating and atrocious shed..Ra and working his shed carefully..head, chin, tail tip, checked his mouth and airway. We were there a good hour and he charged me £12..being so long I had been expecting a hefty bill :)

I suppose on the other hand, when we do take our beloved pet to the vet, it is generally because it appears ill and the cause of the malady is beyond our knowledge. Therefore we are taking our pet to a professional to spend some time trying to diagnose the illness (which is not always an exact science, and sometimes they will misdiagnose initially) and provide some form of treatment to help our pet.
So to sum up, when I go to the vet with my pet, I expect that I'll be paying for expensive time and expensive medication. If I receive a small bill, then that's a bonus.
Although I have to agree with you about the two with kinks, they should have not charged for that.

Well, imagine what it was like for me and Tig, 'cause I live off benefits. The nearest repti vet to me is over an hour away, so the petrol money for my step-dad taking me was one large amount. Then I was charged a hundred quid for Tig's first visit 'cause the vet wasn't usually in that day so I had the pay for his extra time. Tig's treatments, over the time he was with me, cost about six hundred quid I think. That's his medicines, injections, the nebulaizer I bought for him along with his F10, the vets bills for out of hours time. The petrol money I'm not sure on but I'm sure you can add it up.

Of course it was worth it for the time he was with me, and all I ever wanted to do was make him feel better, but it's still a lot of money. Too much for me to afford. I had to lend it off my step-dad and pay it back over how ever so long.

My usual vets doesn't tell you how much things will cost either. Not unless you ask. But I've been going to the same vets ever since they opened so these days, thankfully, I have a good idea of what things will cost.

The annoying thing is that Baytril costs pence for the vets to buy it in. It's as cheap as anything. So why on earth they charge you so much for it is a mystery. I have it in the house most of the time now 'cause I keep Rats as pets and it's there to treat their chests. But it costs me twenty quid just for a full one of those little medicine bottles!

Just me and my zoo.

I haven't looked into it yet, and am starring to think I need to be, so can you get insurance for snakes and if so, who does it and approximately how much.
