Im very excited. Going to be getting my very first Hog next week, so im busy setting up its new home (just a faun for now). I would like to have a desert theme and wondering if its alright keeping them on sand. I know its not advised for other snakes, I wasnt sure whether it would get between their scales or not? fairly sure they live on sand in the wild? Just think it would be cool being able to see all the trails in the sand where its been.
Thanks. |

Thanks for the link, been having a read of all the opinions and to be honest I think I will save the bother and stick with the aspen. saves me buying 2 different types of substrate, and its not worth the risk if anything did happen. Just thought it would be cool to see all the snake trails in the sand. Cheers for your help. |

i did glance through another thread where someone said they used aquarium sand as play sand can be too salty an you need to feed outside the enclosure all the time.
no problem i will have a look later an see if i can find any more info |

We keep Timmy on Megazorb, he loves to burrow in that. Its like tiny balls of paper, soft for little Hoggies

Just checked surrey pet supplies and there is a million different types of sand! so even more confused. Think I will just forget it. Surely there are plenty of sand dwelling snakes kept in captivity that would be fine on sand? Sand boas for example.... |

Just gonna stick with aspen then. Use a fake cactus or something to at least make it look like the desert lol. I feel like the hognose's colours will look out of place in a jungle set up. |

Most of that stuff is sold as gecko sand etc.Long story short,it's more hassle then just aspen etc etc.
Plus if it's a baby you're getting,id say use paper towels for the first few months. |

have read good stuff about megazorb but not used it myself.
off topic but beardies are fine on sand once 6+ months old an accurate feeders, i used to keep mine on play sand with a load of big bits of sandstone slate.
beardie substrate is one of those never ending discussions, personally i wouldnt use wood chip an a friend uses bark as its too big to be eaten and works well |

Yeah, they always seem the most interesting in the shops. always out and about looking busy. Got so many great characteristics as well, turned up nose, hood, black tongue, then theres their "acting" skills lol, fake strikes, huffing and puffing, playing dead (not that I want to promote this behaviour, but it is cool to know). |
