Ok so my one of my royals has always been a pig when it comes to food. While the rats defrosting he waits with his head poking out the hide and strikes as soon as he sees the nice warm rat, now the last few feeds he has not bothered to strike for it but if i leave it for 2-3 mins on the floor of his viv he has a quick wander and then slowly curls round his rat and then begins to eat it.

Anyone tell me why he started doing this?

Mine did that earlier in the year. Within a few weeks she started fasting. She still does it now. Like she's scared of it but when I leave it in the viv she eats it.

Might be something complety different but keep an eye out just the same. As jbarlow said as long as he's still eating I wouldn't worry about it.

My personal thoughts on this is that snakes in the wild must scavenge recently dead stuff and eat it knowing there is no need to kill it. I am also certain that snakes that don't constrict their dead food would constrict and kill live food. (not an advert for live feeding though, its not required if the snake is eating, even if its doing it in a civilised manner)

I was thinking something along those lines as-well. I hear some people say snakes don't have the ability to learn or remember. I found this to be false as my royal used to hunt around his viv when the rats were defrosting. After a while he gave up doing this and realized that the food would come to him eventually. That to me suggests that they do have a basic ability to learn/remember ;)

Either that or he has become incredibly lazy... Hmm
