As most of you no I'm a newbie into the world of reptiles haven't really had too much of a dealing with them until I got my RP in November n then onto a boa last month. I no how to keep them handle them etc but I'm intrigued to learn more.
So basically, as I don't work due to my illness, I'm thinking of trying to ask my local (if there is one local) to see if they would let me spend a couple hours here n there to be around reptiles and hear different things from beginners to breeders.
What do you think? Or what would people suggest in order to expand my knowledge.
I'm looking at getting some beardies soon too so be good to learn about them too. Other than my partners daughter sitting on google n listing me facts. I want experience. Aswell as the buzz I've got for more snakes :-)
Any suggestions would be grateful.
Unfortunately I can't do spiders :( give me the Heeby geebys.
Thanks |

If they let you do that at the rep shop then any kind of experience is great. If not, you already have the basics down so I find lots of reading good. I love just reading about all the different species, how they live in the wild and all their different husbandry requirements in captivity. Theres loads of great books out there (ive got a bookshelf full!), but if you dont want to buy them then just browse the web.
But Nothing beats hands on experience if you can get it. |

Yeah your best bet is hands on experience. Theres a place near me does courses in animal care. They have reptile courses that start quite cheap. Think the beginner reptile care course is about a tenner and takes a day to do. There might be something like that near you as well. |

As well as reptile shops you could consider the reptile house of a zoo if you have one locally. I'm sure they'd be able to help you in your quest. You'd probably get a greater variety of reptiles too. Maybe there's a college or uni that has a reptile collection for their reptile courses that would appreciate help with their collection. Try to think of all the places near you that have reptiles and then find out if you could gain experience with them in some way. |

As well as Repti shops and zoos, and courses, there's also rescue centres. There was one not far from me a few years ago that was ran by vollenteers, and they had all sorts to keep you interested. And of course in that case, on top of everything else you'd learn, you'd get to learn about care and keeping of injured, sick and abused Animals too which I think would be a bonus. It was hard to see some of the Animals there that had been hurt or abused, but if they were still there now I'd love to be a part of it all. I used to love to go and visit them. Wish they hadn't moved away : ( |
Just me and my zoo. |
