Nigels viv is heated by a 100w ceramic on a pulse stat. The viv is 3ft x 15" x 18"h. We get a hotspot of 33c for him which he lays in at night so he is obviously happy with this. He spends all his time, other than when he lays at his hot spot, in his cool end which sits at around 24c-25c on the floor but the air temp is high. When you open the viv you can feel the heat rush out at you and it even smalls really hot inside the viv. On the flip side I have a boa in a 3ft x 24" x 24" heated with a 150w ceramic and the heat that comes from her viv is minimal compared to the royals. Could it be that the 100w ceramic is having to work almost on full power to keep the hot spot thus creating the heat build up? Would it create less heat build up with a 150w in the smaller viv ?

The light on the stat that is controlling the 100w flashes at the same rate as the stat on the 150w. On for like a second off for a second. The guard on the 150w is only warm to the touch where as the guard on the 100w is an awful lot warmer to the touch. Both guards are identical so its nothing to do with the guards.

Could be worth trying a 150w then if it is ok with the boa tank it should be ok for the royal too

I think you will find this with most ceramic heating they create an warm ambient air temp, so what you feel when you open the viv is perfectly normal.I get this from all my vivs that are heated with with ir or ceramic.
