Hi, just after a bit of help, my 4 mth old royal is on aspen bedding, and has a heat matt as this came with set up. But after reading much info and care advice, it seems heat mats are not ideal. And ceramic heat is better? If I am honest was not keen on the heat matt, but went with it. Do not wont to anything wrong for my wee guy, as waited a long time to get him. Could you guys please let me know what you think is best, and also what bedding is best for him. Thanks  . |

aspen is fine for bedding.
heat mat's are ok to use with young royal's long as there on a thermostat but a ceramic setup give better heat as it warm's the air temp as well.
most people tend to use heat mat's with RUB/faunarium setup's and then ceramic or infa red bulb's once they are moved into a viv |

| He's fine as is,Just change the setup to a bulb when you move him into a bigger viv.If you plan on putting him in a viv ofc :) |

| I have my young royal with a ceramic setup. You get more of an air heat with it and I find the snakes are more comfortable and come out of them self more. |

| I think both methods of heating work well as long as they are used correctly. Heat mats have a bit of a bad reputation due to thermal blocking but this can easily be avoided by leaving a small air gap in between the mat and the rub. |

| I have heat mats in my vivs and never had any problems they are run on mat stats and i put a good thick layer of orchid bark over them not had any problems and my biggest male is 1096 grams so fingers crossed it stays this way :) |

I use them in glass vivs,for all manner of things.But not in my wooden vivs,Find bulbs etc far easier.
I've had at least two go,Where they both had hot spots.One part cold the other still hot etc.So the stat won't help you,if the mat is on its way out.
I wouldn't used them myself,in direct contact with anything. |

Wood is an insulator, having a heat source sandwiched between two insulators is very inefficient and a snake absolutely will move substrate out of the way to get to the heat. Heat mats are not suitable for use in a vivarium for any snake with any heft to it, the risk of serious burns is just too high to justify using them. Even a brand new, perfectly functioning mat and thermostat can still burn a snake. |

| Thanks for the advice mate altho my snakes hanent movet there bark yet to lay directly on the mat i think im going to have to invest in some other heat source what is the best heat source other than ceramic ? |

| The best heating is reptile radiators, they take up no room at all. But I love ceramics, the hot spot is always perfect, the ambient temperature is always spot on, it just works exactly as I want it to. |

I've seen wooden vivs with heat mats,Where the snakes gone under the mat.Mat up in the air,probe off the mat or above 2 inches of substrate etc.Like lotabob said to much risk and i've always found ceramic or radiators far better etc etc.
anyway i could go on and on :)
