Hey all.
My royal is now on jumbo/x large mice and I've been trying to switch him to rats for a while now and he has only taken one so far! I have tried defrosting a rat and mouse together and rubbing the mouse over the rat. Any other suggestions would be good thanks!
Oh and when he refuses the rat I will give him a mouse the next day just so he has eaten, should I stop that so he's hungry enough to take a rat? |

Leave it in cool end over night? And let him take it In his own time? My royal refused a normal feed so I thought I'd leave it. Come back in morning to find it go e. worth a shot. |

Couldn't you have switched before you got to the biggest mice? Also keep trying the rats, without feeding a mouse the next day. |

Mine is on large mice - are rats better for them? Do they taste different? Should I switch when he's finished his current supply? |

Well mice are only small so you will have to feed multiple mice as it gets larger unless you get them onto rats |

Have you tried braining the mouse and then scenting the rat? Sounds horrible but the brain matter might work better than just rubbing the mouse over the rat. |

I've just used scissors to cut the head open in the past, Stanley knife is probably better though I bet |

I just use a sharp knife if I have to do any braining. |

We are in the same situation. Tony will not eat a rat and he is on large mice at the moment. Have tried defrosting rat and mouse together, washing the rat and rubbing the mouse over the rat, no luck. Tried rubbing mouse brain over the rat and still nothing. He has always been bit of a fussy feeder so don't want to push him to far. Every time we offer a rat he refuses food and misses a few weeks. Royals can be a right pain in the bum sometimes lol. |

Braining usually does the trick in the beginning stages...
I had to switch from mice to rats almost instantly as mice weren't filling Chief for very long at all, He was constantly on hunting mode lol |

still wont go onto rats! Im going to stop offering mice now in the hope that he will be hungry enough to take the rat! im going to try washing the rat then scenting it with a mouse. would a pinky mouse work? obviously if im only using it to scent the rat i want the cheapest mouse possible! |

Just a thought but buy some pinkies and put one in the rats mouth with a little bit sticking out. It might be just enough to tempt your royal. Ok, it means he's eating a pinkie too but that's not the end of the world and it might be enough, after a few times, to persuade him that rats are good! |

I'm NEVER trying that again! The pinky caught the rats tooth and squirted all down my top! He didn't even take it after all that! Oh well have to try something else next week! |
