I am currently using a brand new luck rep 42w heat mat on a pulse stat but am not happy with it. I use it to hot spot two 50 ltr rubs (they share the single massive mat), but it is always overheating them or warming one a lot more that the other. My older smaller mat was tons better

Are the Habistat mats better? or should I go and use two single mats instead on the one stat???

Advise would be great

I would go with 2 seperate mats which can either be controlled by the same stat or use seperate stats, most of my heat mats are Pro Rep ones and just the one Microclimate mat and in the 2 years I've been keeping snakes I've never had any issues in heating my rubs.

I would have thought I would be unusual for a mat to heat up differently across its length. My 4 stacks are run the same as yours and I see very little difference across two rubs on the same level

The only time I do see a discrepancy is if the probes for the thermometers have been moved around the rubs by the occupants :D

ive had a few old mat's that were a bit warmer on one side, habistat/pro rep mat's are good just avoid these microclimate heat mat's like the plague

I am currently getting a 2 deg difference between the two rubs and they are set up exactly the same (thermometer probes fixed at the same points)

Rub on the left is 32.2 rub on the right 30.1 this is driving me nuts

I'd guess that'd be just down to probe placement/vagaries of the thermometers

I can see differences of 28-34c across the rack depending on who moved what probe around the rub

Besides that variation of 2c isn't gonna make all that much impact anyway

They are all exo-terra thermometers, it just worries me slightly when I get up and see temps of 36 in the rubs as I did this morning. 31-34 I could live with as these are just within the limits but 36 has me worried.

Also this has me thinking would I be better to put my Rubs on runners to lift them off the mat giving some extra air flow to the underneath of the rub?

Gotta agree with you that 36c is a little worrying

The runners idea could be a good shout just to help stabilise the temps

Update:
I borrowed a second stat from a good friend, and it turns out it is not the stats as I received the very same results.

I have come to the conclusion that it must be my rubs and that they must have a variation in the bases (one must be slightly thicker or thinner than the other) therefore not allowing me to achieve similar temps in both. I could only get one perfect and the other would be ways to hot or cold lol.

I have some spare rubs sitting in my garage to heat test over the weekend.

I will post my results. If you don't hear from me I will be smashing rubs into a million pieces by then lol

Thermal blocking in action. The weight of stuff pressing down on an area affects temperature in that area. It doesn't even have to be overly heavy to hold the heat in the mat long enough for it to begin overheating (I use the term overheating as going over the desired temperature and not overheating in a malfunctioning set fire to things really bad day way).

One easy solution is keep things identical in their setup etc and create an air gap to avoid fat snakes sitting in the warm end causing blocking.

This is using a 3mm air gap (rubs sitting on risers) and nothing weighing down the warm end (hides, snakes, etc all removed as of a few days ago)

The larger mats can get hotter on different parts of the mat.If you've tried everything stated in this thread without success,Take the mat back for a replacement.

Stick the probes to the mat, without anything on it.See if one side is miles hotter then the other.

I have swapped to a habistat mat now, which still gives the same issues as the lucky rep.

I am 90% sure it's the integrity of the rub base as I have them now running on 2 mats and 2 stats and the temps are good after alittle adjustment and tweaking which is the norm. Now I have some massive mats which I cannot run and need to buy a another full time stat lol

At least I am getting there I'd guess. Was trying to save on plugs but never mind at least the pythons will be ok which is the main thing

Done lots of heat testing over the weekend and had a rub that gives me ok(ish) still not perfectly happy results.

Rub 1 running a 31.4 and rub 2 running at 32.5

I will settle with these for now as they are within the acceptable range, but the issue is and will continue to drive me nuts for the foreseeable future. Now considering vivs for my babies.
