Hi every1 i have been using orchid bark as my royals substrate and i am thinking on keeping them on aspen same as my corns as its alot cheeper than orchid bark no my question how to i rise the humidity wen shed time comes as with the bark i just misted the vivs down 1 or 2 times a day and it braught it up perfectly as i read with aspen if it gets damp it can grow mould so all pointers welcome also im used to feeding in my viv and i just put a big A3 sheet of paper in and they eat on that as it covers most of the ground in there viv other than about 1 or 2 inch all round the viv rather than eating bits of substrate so how would i do this with aspen same technique or should i get them used to feeding boxes ??
I have always used aspen for my royals, when in shed I purchase spagnum moss which you can buy in a dried block just add water it expands to 5 times the amount. Put some moss in each hide or one hide this will increase the humidity temporally or enough for the shed cycle. Also give the viv walls a light misting daily with warm water.
I keep all mine on Aspen and at shed time I put a damp dishcloth in the their cool hides (these are Tupperware boxes with a hole drilled out of the side, I just mist these until they have shed) dishcloths are the cheap ones you can buy in packs of 5 at any supermarket, they can be washed and used several times before replacing.
