Hi there,

Sorry if this is a silly question or if it has been asked before.

As a zoologist myself (in the olden days anyway!) I realise that a lot of the time when we humans think our pet is 'enjoying' something, we are misinterpreting basic responses to stimulus and putting our own 'feelings' onto the animal. Did that make sense?

However, I've just had Wallace out for his regular handling session and I swear he's enjoying being stroked.

So what do people think? Do our royals really enjoy human contact and being stroked etc., or are they just putting up with us?

I know my beardie LOVES being stroked, and no one can persuade me differently on that one!

Rachael.

Probably, normally not. However when some of ours are around the shedding time they do seem to love a scratch or being helped with their shed if they're having a bad one.
Our Tiawanese would arch itself up into the air to follow your fingers when it was enjoying a scritch.

My royal loves being stroked under his chin. I think it depends on how much the snake is handled.

A lot of people say they don't like being handled and get nothing from it. Does that mean it's cruel to handle them? I handle mine, I don't think they get anything from it though

I think Sas likes being stroked. He seems to like his head stroked too. He pushes into my hand. Boris doesnt mind the stroking but not his head. Ria doesnt seem fussed either way.

I don't think the nervous ones like it but I do think the more sociable ones do, or at least aren't bothered

As for handling, it depends on the snake, some like it, and some want to go off and hide.

I don't believe that they all just tolerate it, sure some do, but some enjoy it and some hate it

My Royal, whenever my mother comes up and strokes him, thinking it's a sign of affection I don't think my Royal likes it much, he seems to tense up following the finger(s) you're stroking him with. This to me seems like he doesn't enjoy it. Because with my Corn you can stroke her and she just doesn't care, she doesn't even show any sign you're doing it so I believe it doesn't bother her too much.

Sas wants to come out all the time! He likes to go through my hair (it's long!) and ends up round my neck where he just hangs! If he didnt like being stroked etc Im sure he would move away cos other times he just wanders off.

Yeah they don't respond in a positive way to being touched, my House snake reacts like he is being electrocuted, twitches and jumping. They seem to settle to it but its a very foreign thing to them.

Thanks for all the comments guys. It will be exciting to see what kind of snake Wallace turns out to be!

(I'm TOTALLY buzzing right now after the best strike EVER!)

Whenever I come in from work and go over to the viv Rex comes over and seems keen to be handled! Though not sure if he enjoys being handled as much as being curious to see what's going on?
