I've had my female Royal Python for around 4-5 years now (since birth). She has always been very placid and friendly. Very easy to handle has never striked or bitten me or anyone else. But the last 3 weeks she has become very aggressive, as soon as I approach the Viv she is alert, moving very quickly striking at random in all directions. I can't handle her at all at the moment.
There have been no changes she's in the same viv, same feeding regime etc. She doesn't seem to be shedding either. She is eating fine.
Can't work out whats wrong, I'm having difficulty just changing her water without being bitten!
Didn't know if anyone had any suggestions to why she would be behaving like this and if there was anything I could do? |

have not really had this experience with royals only with other snakes, there has to be reason why she is doing this, it just does not start for no reason, so you need to work out what.
have you changed anything at all in the set up temps, where the viv is placed, less decoration new bits added ? is she in a busier place in the house have you got any other new pets. are you using something on you that smells different ? loads to consider !
All these tiny insignificant things to you could be big to her. you say she is not shedding when was the last time she shed if she is around 5 years old i can't imagine that shedding will be that frequent anyway although if she is eating ok that is a good sign, as if she was too stressed she would go of her food. Hope I have given you some things to consider investigating.
failing all this you may never find out whats up and she may calm down again as quickly as she got grumpy, either way good luck. |

The only change is I lowered the temperature slightly?
She shedded around 5 weeks ago. She's normally so calm, never had any trouble with her. I can't even approach the glass without her striking at me!!!

| Well that could be it, any change even little can affect behaviour as I found with my at the time little burm. put your temps back to what they were leave her a few days then try again. maybe put some gloves on if your a little wary. thats what i ended up doing. lets us know how you get on |

| When i got my first royal i had him upstairs in my bedroom and after a few weeks i moved him downstairs and he changed, started striking at the glass and pretty much everything you said, put him back upstairs and he stopped... Weird how a little change can affect their behaviour... Hope he starts behaving soon! |

| Did the behaviour change when she shed. If so you may need to check her over, retained eyecaps blind them temporarily, it could be that she cant see. |

| No her behaviour changed 3 weeks after her shedding, had her out etc around that time and she was fine. |
