hi, i have a 9ltr rub heated with a heatmat and komodo 300w thermostat. it is set to 31oc . i also have a digital thermometer in the exact same place as the thermostat probe (on the aspen bedding in hot end) . the reading fluctuates between 30 and 34 even though i have set the thermostat to 31? should i trust the thermostat or not ? hope i have explained well enough lol |

Trust a digital thermometer. But they can vary slightly. I have 2 rubs on one heatmat and 1 thermometer reads 33 and the other reads 31. Still more accurate than the stat though |

The setting on the thermostats just gives a rough temp. Always best to use and trust your digital thermometers. Is it a on/off mat thermostat? If so that's why you'll be getting the temp fluctuations caused by when the stat turns the mat off, it cools, stat switches it back on then it heats up again. There's nothing wrong with those temps that your getting though, they'll be fine. |

yeah its an on/off stat. ok no worries he seems happy, very active but seems very interested in the rub lid lol if hes not out and about his head is in the entrance to his hide. he looks slightly underweight for his size. i fed him on monday morning, when do you think i should try again? he hasn't got the typical royal bulge in his body... |

The thermometer should give you a reasonably accurate reading of the temperature. The setting on the stat is best just to ignore and just turn it up or down based on your thermometer. The temperature fluctuation will depend on what sort of stat you have. An on/off stat will give the biggest of the ranges as it completely switches off when it's set point is reached and then won't turn back on until the temperature drops by a few degrees below that. A pulse proportional stat will approach it's set point then pulse on and off at a varying rate to maintain that set point so will hold the temperature better with less variation. If you were to use a lamp for heating, a dimming stat will adjust the current through the bulb to maintain the set point, this also has a smaller fluctuation than the on/off stat. Your mat stat will be an on/of type which is why your are seeing the range. As your probe is touching the aspen above the mat it will show the full range of the stats on/off cycle. If the temperature probe was above the aspen giving the air temperature you would probably see less fluctuation. Personally I would keep your probe where it is, on the aspen.
Edit: That's the trouble when one takes ages to type up a response. Three others reply before you get it posted. Doh |

If he's still young you could feed him again on Saturday, go with a feed every 5 days if you wanted. What's his age and weight? |

cheers for the advise, like i said he seems happy so will just leave it as it is. i think its also because of the weather change and my room temp has dropped a bit so ill need to adjust the stat slightly. |
