Not too great with trees but I think as long as it hasnt got resin like pine or cedar then it should be fine. Just make sure to treat wood to kill any nasties. Remove all the bark. Sand off and sharp pieces and get it all nice and smooth. Cover in 10% bleech to kill anything living in it. Then give it a VERY good rinse with water before leaving to dry. |

What if they have mites or something living in them? |

Branches are better off cleaned. Mites of the snake variety are very very unlikely to be on a branch., but other bugs, mould, animal poo and wee, bacteria and who knows what else could be. Our captive animals aren't exposed to outside bugs so things we put in with them should be free of anything that could potentially make them sick. |

Fruit trees, minus a very small number of tropical species, are all harmless and contain nothing harmful to Animals. Their sap is non-toxic and even safe to eat... not that you'd want to : / Their bark is also clean and free of anything dodgy that the tree would produce.
I would always strip a branch of all bark, clean the branch, sand down any rough edges and then either you can bake it in the oven to dry out the sap and the branch or failing that you can soak it for a good while, changing the water daily, and then leave it to dry naturally or in the sun. |
