Having a nightmare with ceramic heaters!! Gone through 3 250w bulbs since summer in the same 4x2x3ft viv. I'm using a habistat pulse stat with swell holder. I blew one exo terra after about 2 months, bought another that blew the day I got it, got a new bulb holder and swell bulb this time (still 250w) and I've just checked viv and it's blown! Lasted about 2months!! What am I doing wrong?!?! My royals bulb is 3 years old and still fine.

We're do you get them from? The temp probe is it near the heater? It's not overloading it self some how is it? Is there any ventilation? Build up of heat. Shorting the cables or something? I take it it's wired up ok?

Got the first one from swell, the second from my local shop, they tested it in store to make sure it was okay and it popped as soon as I plugged it in. Then the third was from swell and it was their own brand, along with a new bulb holder. Rather than the element going on this one it seems to have cracked the actual ceramic causing it to lose vac.

The bulb is screwed into swell bulb holder which is supposed to take 250w. This is plugged into habistat pulse stat, which goes directly into the wall. The viv is 3ft high and the bulb is attached at the top and the probe is lying on the bottom.

Have you tested the socket its plugged into? Try another in the house if you can or run an extension until you can test the socket as it could be shorting out.

Edit: If your not sure on testing the socket ask someone who knows about electrics before you go & blow yourself up!

Yeah I don't have much clue about electrics. Got a mate who's a spark though. Is it normal for a ceramic heater to crack and break open?!?
So went to my local shop first thing this morning to get a new Exo terra 250w. Another £35 down the pan!!!

I would guess, & it is only a guess that if a ceramic bulb cracks open you must have a short in the socket or on that mains ring.
