So I’ve had my snake for just over a week now. I tried a feed on her due date (Sat) and she didn’t feed so I planned to leave her for another week before feeding.
I noticed yesterday that the humidity in the viv was around 48% RH so I thought I’d bump it up a bit. I put some water onto a piece of kitchen paper and lay it on the substrate (Aspen) near the warm spot.
When I woke this morning it was gone! Mrs Snakey ate the bloomin’ thing!
What I also noticed was that she had shed (in parts).
Because I only saw her briefly just over a week ago I didn’t know if her colour was dull or not so I never knew she was in blue (her eyes looked OK). So she was not interested in her food on Saturday, either because she was new or because she was blue, or both.
Turns out she must be hungry now as she’s eating kitchen paper! I’ve put a damp face cloth in the warm spot now. Hopefully when I get back from work it will still be there.
Has anyone had this happen to them? Will it just pass through her like it does my dog, who also has the same strange love for kitchen paper?
I hope she eats on Saturday.

I've heard of it happening once before, it's incredibly rare and normally only happens when the snake is eating food on top of the papers. Not to sound rude but have you made certain she's not just buried it under substrate or dragged it into a hide?
The boa I previously heard of doing it unfortunately died from it but I believe there were complications in that and the boa was a very small one. I'm sure yours will be fine but I honestly can't advise as I've never experienced or know anyone who's experienced it. I have done a little googling about and found a few stories of snakes consuming various kitchen rolls that weren't bothered by it who did just pass the kitchen roll.
I'll do some more research and get back to you!
EDIT: Okay had a little look around it seems like your best bet is to just wait and see if it passes through, it could cause a blockage though which for a royal is going to be a pain to notice as they do tend to go weeks without passing anything, keep an eye on him and see how he goes. |

Cheers for that. I did a bit of googling myself and found similar advice. However, you did come up with a good idea. You certainly weren’t rude because I never even though to THINK that she might have buried it or pulled it into her hide. My wife went in for surgery this morning so I didn’t have time to be hoking about the viv too much and I wanted to leave her alone as she’s still new, but good point! I’ll check later to see if she’s just hid it or buried it.
I was thinking should I try handling in the hope she’d regurgitate it, but don’t want to cause any undue stress to it so I’ll feed her on Saturday as planned and hope that everything comes out as it should!
Thanks again!

No problem Alves, I'm willing to bet it's hidden somewhere in the vivarium to be honest very unusual for a snake to eat something that doesn't taste like rat ^^ if you took a look in one of my girls tubs right now you'd notice her water bowl has been pushed into the warm end and the newspaper substrate has all been scrunched up and placed in her water bowl to soak >.> they can certainly be messy creatures!
edit: I hope your wife is okay and wish her a speedy recovery from everyone at TRP :) |

Thank you. Hopefully all will go ok and I'll only have the snake to worry about. |

I agree totally with Kelfezond. My 3 are all on kitchen roll but one of them regularly shreds it all! He tears big holes in it and my girl buries herself under it, but neither of them have ever eaten any of it! |

It's quite funny that they seem to have such pronounced personalities! I'll check for the paper later on tonight when I get back from the hospital. I lifted the cold side hide and it wasn't there. Will check the warm side though. |

I hear you boomslang ;) I suppose it helps to personify them a little. I'm sure I'll find the missing paper one way or another! |
