So on my warm side I've a hide. The stat and temp probes are right beside the hide. They read 31°C.

I just got myself a laser temp gun. I checked the temps around the viv. Beside the hide is 31°C, the temp inside the hide is 31°C and the temp on top of the hide is 35°C. Does that sound about right?

There are recommended temps of 30-32°C which the ground surface is, but is the temp of the top of the hide too high?

Any thoughts anyone?

Nope all is fine :) bound to be hotter closer to the bulb but it won't be enough to do any harm.

Thanks once again kelf. I thought it should be OK, but doesn't hurt to ask. I figured it would be like that in the wild.

I don't (and never have) measured the temperature in the hides. As long as the hot and cool ends are roughly correct, the snake will be fine.

I've learned to keep reminding myself that in the wild the temperatures fluctuate more than mine do so, like you say, ad long as they are roughly correct I'm not too worried.

A common mistake as a new owner is to fret when things aren't quite right (I did it myself). Don't, as long as its in the right ball park, everything will be good. In fact, you can cause all sorts of problems if you keep tinkering with the ir habitat, royals are happiest left alone. The IR bulb in my vivarium blew (after 18 months stirling service) a few months back while I was out for the weekend, it could have beenup to 72 hours the snake was left at ambient (albeit that the heating was on so it was about 21 degrees) by the time i'd replacd the bulb. It was absolutely fine and suffered no ill effects. Just roll with it...

Im thinking of getting a temp gun. What type do you have and where did you get it from?

I got mine from amazon. It works a treat and proved accurate against a ukas calibrated thermometer...

They do prove useful and, if you're like me, everything in the house will have its temperature checked! For £13 it's a steal.

In my first setup I put the thermometer next to wall in warm side instead putting it under the lamp directly, I know this sounds crazy but the thermometer was showing 32-33 that means under the bulb it was 40-45 maybe more!! two years and my royal was living great life, eating shedding with no problem you just do you best to make it correct and leave your snake to choose the right place to stay in
