Ziggy the albino has been with us for 10 days now.
I have posted pics of his viv and set up in the picture section and he is heated with a heatmat and stat. Digitally monitored.
Prior to having him he was in a reptile shop in a small rub heated with a heat wire?
We tried to feed him on Tuesday which was 7 days after his last feed in the shop, but he showed no interest.
I changed his viv around and put more thing in ie. tubes and extra greenary so he has plenty of places to hide, and I have refrained from turning his light on so he can settle. Apart from changing his water, I havent bothered him at all, until this morning to check him over.
He seems fine and was quite curious when out and showed no signs of being stressed or pre shed, so defrosted his mouse to try and feed again today.
He rejected again.
Should I be worried???
I am a bit concerned as I have been reading all these threads about other snake passing away for no apparent reason, and I dont want this to happen to Ziggy as he is a special boy.
He did poo the other day and weighs 186grams which is about right for his age. I think he is 12 months around December time.
I plan to leave him another 5 days before trying again to feed, with no handling or contact. Is this just a settling in problem do you think????
My other Royals seem to have settled in straight away, but then they are babies so knew no different, but as he was in a rub prior to being here maybe he just needs extra time to settle??? |

As above really...IMO with him only weighing 186g at 12 months old i would say he has never been a great feeder. Royals weigh about 50-70g when hatched.

I was told that albinos can be worse at feeding than normal royals too - is this true?? |

you could try him next feed with something smaller than he normally takes and maybe mouse scent it... |

I know its worrying but you just have to chill and relax. You need to learn what makes your Royal tick, i have 2 and they are completely different. My female will eat even when in shed when she cant even see, my male just hides away. Do you have a quiet room to keep him in away from everone? Just dont hassle him at all, dont change his layout, dont pick him up unless its completely nescessary. I keep mine in the dark from 6pm - 6am. Even in the day time i keep the viv and rub slightly covered. What time of the day do you try feeding him? night time is best, try 9 or 10pm. Let the mouse thaw out next to the vent for 5-6 hours to get the smell into the viv. Try feeding only when you see him sticking his head out of the hide. If he doesn`t strike leave the food in over night. My male which i bought him 5 weeks ago ate for the first time last night so i know exactly what you going through, http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2082 Good luck. |

Some good advice above there. No need to start panicking yet. I do the same as Hodgie. Leave the food to defrost near the setup, wait till 9 or 10 and when he is in his hide. Little wiggle and Bam! It will take time for him to settle into new environment. I would keep an eye on weight too. My 3 month old royal weighs 115g. |

Yes he is in the quietest room of the house and hasnt been handled or anything, I just checked him quickly the day of feeding to see if he was pre shed - as if he was I wouldnt have bothered thawing a mouse for him.
I tried to feed him at around 3pm, as that is what he was used to in the shop, but my other snakes usually get fed in the evening - 9pm-ish.
Its good to hear that you had the same trouble with yours not feeding for 5 weeks after getting him, but its just that on having our other snakes they have all fed straight off after a week of settling. They have been hatchlings whereas Ziggy is older, so that maybe a contribitary factor.
Fingers crossed for Thursday then. XXX |

i have a male that has just hit 700g and has not fed since the rains came..lol...and i realised i had put female shed next to his viv, so that might also have got him going...
i am putting him on a ten day wait now for his next feed..
he will probably be in shed then, but fingers crossed all will be well;-) |

head slightly out can also be a sign of them waiting for dinner to pass by so they can pounce.. |

I agree with Daz, at 186g, sounds like he's never been an avid feeder. My Albino is 12 months old and 900g. |

No, not worried, the opposite in fact probably. It shows that he has never really eaten a great deal, so not eating with you is unsurprising. You said in another thread that the shop owner always got him out to show people. This probably stressed him out and he probably didn't eat much.
With sufficient time to settle in and patience I'm sure he'll be ok. Just weigh occasionally to check on him. |

Yes he did - and he is lovely when being handled.
Thanks for the reassurance - he hasnt been bothered since sunday and seems to be peeking at night, so will wait and see on friday now. fingers crossed. |

I'd stop handling personally until he's eating. |

Agree with BE would want him to take at least three to four feeds before handling... |
