Hi just thought this may be useful for some people when they are thinking about what size of food they need to be giving to their new Royal.
from top to bottom we have:
Pinkie Mouse 3grams
Rat Pup 13grams
Fuzzy Rat 19grams
Medium Mouse 19 grams
Small Weaner Rat36grams
these weights are for the prey items in photograph. the medium mice, fuzzy rats,rat weaners all vary in weight a few grams either way. eg the lightest weaner out of a bag of 25 i have weighed 27g. the heaviest 42g. were some of the fuzzy rats and medium mice were 17g.
I hope this can be of some help to people. if you are working out prey for your snake based on 10-15% of their body weight you'll know what you are looking for. |

hehe, fuzzy rats dont look very fuzzy
Boo is starting on these in 2 weeks but the ones the pet shop showed me had fur on them??? |

they are fuzzy that one just a bit less than others and still frozen like a rock. |

| yeah just a bit. small rat maybe that weight. There seems to be problems were different shops call the items different things which causes confusion. |

Boo weighs 162g, weighed her a minute ago, so fuzzy rats is what i am going to get her on, bit of a size difference to what she has now but i think she will enjoy it.

I gave Heffa a large mouse yesterday, and she tried to eat it feet first. Took her an hour to work out that head first is easier. She been eating small mice with a hopper for the last couple of weeks, which when weighing totalled 20g and she is 200g. This one weighed just over 20g but was quite a lot bigger and she looked like she was struggling a bit.
I really want to get her on rats, i bought 2 small weaner rats but they look massive compared to the one in your picture, do you think they gave me the wrong size? |

| small weaners can be more than 10g heavier than the one in pic above. may be wrong size maybe not. perhaps a bit to big at the moment any way. try at get your hands on some fuzzy rats. they would be a better size to be starting with. |

How long roughly does it take for a snake to move from fluffs to weaners?
I know its different for every animal. and do they go from 1 fluff to 2 fluffs
and then onto weaners, or doesn't it matter if you go straight to weaners |

| will be a good few months as the jump from fluff to weaner is quite a big one. Personally I went from fluffs to weaners after about 7 months (ish) will check when I get home and can see my records. |

i went from pups to the smallest weaners i could find as i could not get fluffs..

| I did the same with Stig tbh Anne, he went from big pups to VERY small weaners, as at the time fluffs were no where to be found up here. |

The size of prey available has really gone down hill. Was chatting to the local rep shop owner and he was telling me that they are killing the particular item as soon as it hits the weight required to be classed as that.
ie. large mouse is classed between 21-28g's...
the large mice he is getting are 21g so are the smallest they can be. |

I wonder is this due to increase in demand and popularity of snake as pets. also spring 09's if not on rats yet will be on large mice.
there is no denying that reptiles are really becoming more popular and i know i am only knew to it my self. but if you even look at the members that have joined this forum in the last 6 months compared to the first 6months i'm sure there will be a noticeable difference. |

| See Slash Has been on rat fluffs now since the 25 july, 1 every 5 days. Now slash last week was 297 grammes & I am thinking that he needs to move up to weaners as the fluffs vary from between 15-30 grammes, Problem is everywhere I look at weaners they all seem to be about 40 grammes+ and look huge. I need somewhere that does weaners around the 30-35 weight, seems a nightmare finding the right food. |

Can be a pain. 2 suggestions.
1 purchase a small set of scales that you could bring with you when you buy the prey items and try and weigh it at source so you know what you are getting.
2 when you buy in bulk order you seem to get a bit more of a mix of weights. and at the end of the day you will end up having to use it all at some point. Would just be a matter of sorting them out in to gradual weight.
as with everything about keeping snake there are different views on feeding. some say 10% some 10-15% some as thick as the widest part of snakes body.
going with the 15% view 35-40g weaners would be ok. |
