I have recently brought a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft vivarium for a new snake. The temperature has to be 27-29C. The tank is being heated by a 100W heat bulb which will be replaced with a infra-red bulb as soon as I can get the bayonet to screw in fitting (which is currently sold out in the reptile shop).
It has not reached that temperature but it is slowly going up. However for it too get to say 26C my thermostat is set to about 30C, so therefore I am going to have to turn the thermostat up even more to get to the right temperature.

My questions are:

1. Is this slow rise in temperature due to the size of the vivarium
2. Will turning the thermostat up full whack to get the right temperature going to affect the snake in anyway. I assume that as long as the temperature is fine then it doesnt matter what the thermostat is set to

P.S. There is no possible way for my snake to reach the light guard, let alone the light until it gets to around 8ft so there isnt anyway at all the bulb will burn it.

Hope this makes sense. I just asking because i am picking new snakey up on monday

all the thanks
kerrie

Ignore the numbers on the thermostat, just turn it until you get the right temp as measured by a digital thermometer.

i agree with BE my theromstat is running at 99f but my digi thermometer says it is running at 88f. make sure you put a digi thermometer on there to make sure it aint overheating.

thanks.
BE, the adaptor you showed me on the link. will a 150W exo terra infra red heat bulb fit into it because the screw on this lightbulb is rather big...and some of the screw adaptors i have seen only accept the size of normal screw bulbs

No idea, that's a huge bulb though, I use 75W bulbs in my 3' vivs.

if i could find a bayonet fitting it would be easier than changing the holder in the viv

Are you talking about actual heat bulbs or ordinary red bulbs?

IR bulbs plasterers use them for drying plaster so b&q would probably have them
