I have bought an an ADT wooden vivarium in preparation for getting my first Royal. I was going to use a heat mat and thermostat arrangement and so went for the Lucky Reptile Thermo Control PRO II,TC2-PROUK. However, the store owner advised against a heat mat to prevent the wood becoming too hot and smouldering and suggested a red lamp arrangement instead.
Will this work and will it work with the thermostat i've bought? I don't think bulbs work too well on thermostats do they?
Help appreciated. |

I us a heat mat. providing it's on a stat it won't get hat hot. 30-33 maybe. Not enough to burn |

Presumably you have the mat inside the Viv? If so, do you cover it with a nother thin layer of wood, or just substrate? |

alot of people just cover with substrate. but i and a few others chose to cover with something. either lino, slate or tiles i use tiles as they hold the heat and spread it further, there is also no chance of the snake getting to it |

Thats the biggest load of rubbish i have ever heard, nice try from shop owner to sale you more expensive equipment, mats are fine for younger snakes but when then get heavy a lamp would be better but theres no chance of a viv catching fire from a mat,if any thing theres more chance that a un-thermostated lamp would burn it |

if your using a viv i think it would be better using a bulb with a stat on. how big is the viv and how old is the snake? |

The viv is 3' x 2' x 2' and the snake is yet to arrive, but hopefully no older than 6 months old. |

The mat goes inside a wooden viv,i would be careful with heated rocks as they can cause burns |

I have my yearlings in vivs with Infra red lamps on dimmer stats, the red light means you do get to see them without it disrupting their day/night cycle, I would always choose a heat lamp (properly guarded) over a mat which I use only with young hatchlings. |
