Hi all
My royal, Brian seams to be more active than usual today, he's not been under his hide all day, just knocking about round his tank. I'm not too concerned, it's nice to see him out but we don't usually see him while late on. Any ideas anyone? It is feeding day today, maybe he knows and he's on the prowl for his weekly mouse? I don't know!
Would love to hear from you experts!

I don't follow a standard feeding routine I like to vary it a little as it might be for them in the wild, so long as over a month they have had sufficient food I am happy with that :)I keep a meticulous log so I know what they have eaten and their weights |

I vary feeds between 7 and 10 days, never use a fixed routine. I put kitchen towell down in the viv so that he doesn't ingest substrate and it seems that he has learnt to associate this act with feeding, as when the towell goes down, he becomes quite lively - more alert if you like. However, what i have notied is that outside of this, he can be active on one day and non-active for a week, it does not seem to follow a pattern at all. |

Yes, I've noticed with my corns that they're sometimes very active and friendly, then at other times, regardless of feeding and shedding cycles, withdrawn. However my royal lad, Shahi, is usually alert and prowling 12-24 hours before his feeding time.
But at the moment I'm trying to convert him to rats. The first time he refused, so I fed him his usual mousey dinner and delayed the next meal a couple of days to coincide with corn feeding day so that the second rat, if refused, could be recycled by a corn. I feared Shahi would be frantic, but no. He slept(the colder weather?) And he refused his rat again - but when he saw a mouse approaching he went into killer cobra mode!
Yeah, they're inconsistent! |

What amazes me, is that despite the plethora of posts and articles regarding non-feeding snakes and that despite constant reasurances from others that it is not uncommon for Royals to miss several feeds for no apparent reason, people are still on here dumping themselves if their snake misses 3 weeks worth... |

LOL - we're worrybuckets - we have to have something to worry about!
In mitigation, having read just about all the posts on the forum, it's the people who've bought a young royal who does not feed at first, who are the chief worriers. Myself included - because Shahi was a slow starter and there were one or two complications. I think it's impossible not to worry under those circumstances - the snake is very young, you don't want it to lose weight, you don't want to let it down by inadvertently doing something to put it off its food. Even if you're experienced it's still a relief when it starts eating.
If Shahi now went off his food for three weeks I wouldn't like it, but he's been eating so well (except for rats!) that I'd be able to take it in my stride. If my new girl, Saada, doesn't eat over the next three weeks I'll be less relaxed; it will be a relief when she eats a couple of meals in her new home, and to know she's settled well enough to be able to do that.
And of course when they are fully adults I KNOW they'll have periods of fasting - that's what royals do.
In defence of us worrybuckets, I'd say - it's better to worry than trust to luck.
(Besides, we can't help it ...) |

lol, i slighlty worry about my new girl not eating for 3 weeks and still has not eaten with me yet, i not really worried, but it is slighlty more frustrating as to why they are doing it, if bullet went of his food i wouldn't mind cuz to be honest he could do with not eating for 3 weeks lol, but with bow she has nothing on her atm, so it does worry me that is she carries this on she could go down hill and she so precious to me, i just hope that she eats soon |
