After I cleared the boa of mites, I didnt bother treating the new substrate or cooking it (i use Aubiose). I suppose its what you feel more comfortable with though, and whatever gives you more piece of mind. |

Freezing the bedding for 48hrs is another great method of killing bugs-also there's no risk of burning your house down. I only use kitchen towels or White news paper. find it much more hygienic for the snakes plus if there is a problem you spot it straight away. downside is it's not as attractive. |

Freezing will kill of any live beasts in the substrate, if you are wanting to make sure everything is killed, including eggs, within the substrate you are best baking it.
Mites are passed from snake to snake or snake to people to snake (my understanding)so not really sure the benefits of treating the substrate other than to kill off any other type of bugs that may be in that.

I think you`ll find that mites are carried airborn as well http://www.youtube.com/user/fgs9#p/u/56/lXBMgNXzgb0 |

I have never baked my substrate (I use Aubiose too), I would though if I was using Orchid Bark for instance. |

Yes you can microwave it, but you'd have to do it in several batches to fill a 3' viv. |

hi, Danny, i never thought aspen needed further treatment but the women who I bought Surahi from today said that in their opinion mites could survive in it, and to microwave it before use ... never knew! |

I always keep any new snake in quarantine away from my established collection and on paper towelling so that I can observe any mite activity, after about 8 weeks if all is clear I use aspen I buy in bulk and put it in the oven for 30 mins before I use it just to be sure, just being over cautious as the shop I buy it from keep snakes and have had mites! |

Hi, Robert, what oven temperature do you recommend for baking aspen? I've had no problems with it but after being told by Surahi's previous owners that they recommend baking/microwaving substrate, I reckon I'll do that just to be on the safe side. Thanks! |
