hi all! forgive me if this has already been answered but am up to me eyes with stuff atm and i realy need some help!
I've got 6 royals and 1 blood python who have all shown evidence of mites over the past 2-3 weeks (i keep em in RUB's side-side on heat strips) and despite checking the snakes daily and thoroughly cleaning the RUBs i can't seem to eradicate the little bleeders?
I have tried the frontline advice in the sticky thread in all but 2 of the royals are only about 3mths old and am worried it might do em some harm if i use it on them? i've literally bleached all the water bowls, hides and RUBS on a 48hourly basis, keep em all on kitchen towel and yet they're still surviving!?!
over the past few days their numbers do seem reduced as i'm only finding 2 or 3 but they seem to be mainly around the eyes (despite bathing) and nowhere else? clearly they're getting re-infected but i can't see how? i've even tried putting a 'frontline border' around the outside of each RUB to poison the little buggers that might be trying to move from snake to snake / tub to tub but am slowing losing my hair and sleep, not to mention what it must be like for me poor snakes being so constantly irritated by the parasites! if anyone can shed some light on how to sort this once and for all i would be your friend for life!!

| sorry, i dont know how to get rid of mites as i have never dealt with them, i just hope you get rid of them soon as i now how bad fleas are lol |

| I have only had mites when bringing them in with new animals which is why I always quarantine them as far away as possible from my established collection, I still have 3 in quarantine, no sign of mites but better to be safe than sorry. You could try hypoaspis mites they do work as I have treated 3 newcomers successfully with them. Bathe the snakes to get rid of any adults and put hypos in all the rubs, they will eat the eggs and young mites. follow the link that BE has given above, be sure to keep the hypos going as long as you can to eradicate the snake mites, keep snakes on kitchen paper and check regularly for snake mites. |

| thanks for your help folks i really appreciate it :) I'm keeping em all on white kitchen paper atm and still not much evidence of a bad infestation (thankfully) but to play extra safe i've set up a new quarantine area in the spare room and gonna use that to try n contain the problem ; if all else fails then hypoaspis it is!! maybe some hungry hypo's will put the fear of christ into the little poppyseed lookalikes!! |

| Have you given your snakes an oil bath, totally harmless and very cheap and will defo kill all mites on them? |

Hi there how's it going with the mites as B said Ardap the way to go on everything in the vivs and on all that you put in not water bowls
wood ect needs to be put in a bleach week bath then rinsed and cooked
also the same solution inside the vivs or ruds on the plastic plants a week mixed solution of Listarene mouth wash (gold) you can use that for the rubs as well(wakes the place smell like a dentists)then
treat everything with Ardap not cheap but it works when doing this seel all viv block vent ect and close doors and seel that to and leave to let it do it's job. Now while waiting to the poor snakes
as Hodgie said olly bath time i know some dont like it but he will thank you later.Now if you snake has shall we say a hissy fit sorry little joke there which he or she may i myself put the snake in a rub
with kitchen towel dry it will get wet then get a nice hand full of said towel roll it like you are going to paint then dip it into olly oil and paint the snake and make sure you get it around the mouth and the eyes.By this time the towel that was dry is now full of oil
that a good thing by now he/she is wiggleing around in it and getting the bottom of the snakes scales ect leave 20mins then if you can and have the room place the snake and the rub into a bigger one with the lid on and let them get them self out onto dry towel by this time the ardap has done it's job another little wipe round.
Then when your happy put the snakes back in.This is what i did to 2 royals and my boa and now thay are like three diff snakes mite free
for 8 weeks now oh and still on towel have not gone back to aspen or bits of cork. Sorry it when on a bit hope this helps all. |

hi all, thanks for all your help, am sorry i've not replied sooner but had some lousy shift patterns over x-mas and new year...
Righty then, first off is some good news - although they're not completely gone, i seem to be keeping a lid/control on the little swines, but still find the odd one or two on some of my larger kids, so just before i move em through to quarantine i just wondered if it safe to use frontline on em? the 3 i'm referring too were all born '09 and weigh between 300 & 500gm and in good health otherwise besides the mites, just wanna make sure its safe and im not gonna do em any harm?  |

Not sure about frontline as above i used an oil bath on mine with 100% success.
The problem with mites is that they lay eggs which will hatch so you could have them again in a few weeks time. Mites will often travel 8-10 ft from the snakes as well so you need to treat and then move your snakes to another area of the house for a month or 2.

yes frontline will be fine, its what the rep shop used on my royals, and its what BE will advise people
like hodgie sed, the thing is eggs cannot be killed by thing like it, so u have to keep the treatments up for at least 4 weeks, or until u see no more mites for at least a week |

Hi, sorry to hear you're still being plagued.
I haven't had any experience of mites (so far! touch wood!) but I've read good reports of Callington mite spray. I believe you remove the snake from the viv, spray viv (it kills mites and eggs and fumes get into all crevices) and even when it's safe to return the snake, any mites on the snake will die too (have I got that right, guys?)
It's not cheap, but Blue Lizard (they have a website) have it on offer for £13. Delivery is free on orders over £50 - I stock up on bulbs and substrate. (Am biased, I've always found them good.)

Not doubting that frontline may work but i would advise doing a little research on it being in contact with your snakes first. BE has put up a sticky in this section.
Also Don't use it on any that are very young or any that are going into shed or gravid. |

bats got it pretty much right about the callington. u need to remove the water too, spray viv and it creates a vapour. leave for twenty mins then put snake back but dont put the water back until 24hrs later. its only taken one treatment of it for me and not seen the little gits for a while

For quotes, you go to the top of the post next to where they give the time of the post, and there are 2 little icons - I think the one on the left is for pm-ing (oops edit, no, it's to look up profile!) and if you cursor over the one on the right with the little tick or arrow emblem, it will indicate that you can put that post up as quote.
