Hi All
New to this forum, second post now ;)
Was just wondering why there's no ability to subscribe to a topic, thread, sub-forum etc? I find that very handy on other forums....
Great site though, totally full of very useful info
Thanks :) |

Subscribing means that you can get emails when people post, either to a thread/topic/sub-forum, or whole forum... The most useful one for me is so that I can get an email when someone replies to something I've posted. Means that I can ask a question, trawl the internet elsewhere and not miss a reply...
The FAQ section here talks about it being available on this forum: http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/forum/faq.asp#notify
But I can't see the icons anywhere on this forum to subscribe to anything? So I'm guessing the Admins have turned it all off....
Was just wondering why and maybe I can put in a request for it please?

Lol - normally you can choose what your default setting is - so you can turn it off by default and then subscribe to individual threads. You only get an email for the first reply until you go and read the thread - so many people may reply but only one email. Once you've read it, it remembers that and then emails you again if there are more replies. For me, I would always want an email to a post where I ask a question. I think if you subscribe to a sub-forum you can get like a daily digest of post subjects or something. But that's on other forums, I'm not sure how it would work here. |

Yes, I remember this system from RFUK - yes, I'd find it useful myself because if I get distracted with anything else, I sometimes miss a post I'd be interested in. |

I'm never normally involved in that many threads to lose track to be honest but more functions are always better :D |

From recollection there was an option, but the email system for the forums didn't work properly and still don't (hence why you can't use that option from a members profile) so it was probably turned off otherwise people would wonder why they weren't getting emails notifying them of responses to threads. |

I was once a mod on another forum, I kept it turned off as i found it very irritating. I once had over 500 emails so I'm glad its turned off on this one!
The active topics button on the top of the all forums page will let you see the topics that have been active since last visit, that can narrow your search for responses. |

I think you can subscribe to posts on the Reptilian, but this old forum software isn't that advanced so we turned it off.
I will ask Lewy if you really want it, but not sure it'll work that well because of the email thingy |

I think it would be really useful if it's possible. I'm not someone who comes on a forum everyday and if I hadn't just happened to pop in today, I wouldn't have known that 2 more people had put helpful posts into my thread since I was last here.
I did get an email from the forum to inform me that you had moved the topic, so something is working email-wise!
(Although I do admit that I didn't get an email when I was told I would after I registered to confirm my registration had been accepted)... |

I just click on the 'active topics' link. It automaticly shows you all new posts since your last visit.
It's not a super busy forum so by just comming on every few days and clicking that link you will get a few threads come up with the new posts in. I find it easy to keep up with responses to my posts :) |
