So, I made that fateful call: 'Hello' I said, 'I'm interested in the boa you have for sale, do you still have him'?.....'YES' came the reply! BANG!....I'm in!
I'm off on a little trip tomorrow morning and no matter how hard i try, i cant hear myself saying, 'No thanks, I wont take him'
He is a BCI, possibly Colombian, he said he looks like a red tail which gave me reason to think Colombian. 3years old, 4ft long, strick feeds well, docile, good to handle, inquisitive, no sign of mites, last shed 2 weeks ago, feeds on small rat every 10 days. Reason for sale, pregnant wife!
So, I quizzed the bloke over the phone and got the above info, is there anything any of you fab folks can think of that i should ask or look out for before handing over the dosh?
I know I'm going to need a bigger viv, he comes with a 3' viv and everything in it but i dont know yet what the set up is like so I'm expecting the worst but my primary concerns are that I'm getting a healthy happy boa.
I'm SOOOOOO excited!

very nice, and yes resistance is futile when it comes to boas.
I would say check carefully, if you are saying he is a BCI and then possibly a red tail, true red tails are BCC however most boas have a red tail so just make sure you know what you are getting as if it is a red tail they do grow larger than the BCI.
good luck |

Thanks GMac!, yes I'm aware of the difference between BCC and BCI so if that tail is bright red then im going to have to say no and that wont be easy! No way i would manage a full grown BCC on my own. I dont think the owner knows that colombians have rusty red tails too so I suspect that is why he mentioned it. |

He is mine! Brought him home today and he is settling in, not going to handle for a few days as he had a bumpy car ride and has been through some rough times. The guy had his stat set at 76f in the hot end so he is in need of a bit of heat, poor boy. Dont know how he even managed to eat let alone digest. The viv is too small, only 3ft but as he is only 4ft i dont need to rush into a huge viv just yet. Planning on building my own 5ft viv soon. He has no substrate, just newspaper. No thermometer, just the dial on the stat as guidance for temps. No hygrometer and no cleanliness by the looks of it either!
So, I've been shopping, spent the same on his needed stuff as i spent on the snake but at least he and I will be happy forever after!
All tips on looking after a BCI very welcome.

You know, we are all learning, and we all make mistakes, but when I read this kind of thing I really do wish there was a snake test, akin to a driving test, at the end of which a person couldn't keep a snake without a snake license ...
Good luck with the boa, Sandi. |
