Hi Kelzefond,
Just my very honest observation...
Your snake probably can't find a secure spot in his viv that's why he is always climbing. If I'm correct in my analysis, this could potentially be harmful for the snake.
I looked at your video and it seems like your viv is very large with big open see-through spaces in a sunny (active?) part of the house. This is too open for a royal.
From my experience, my snakes get really stressed out in wide open spaces. All my vivs are "cluttered up" so that there is always a "canopy" on traffic areas (from one hide to the other and from hide to waterbowl). I use plastic leaves and logs to achieve this. When I had my new baby snakes in their temporary "grow out" RUBs, I used crumpled newspaper to clutter up the viv.
Also, all my glass vivs have the sides covered with dark material (I have cork bark on a few, aquarium background on another). This minimizes the royal's perceptions of movement around the room where the vivs are in.
Anyway, here's an example of one of the cluttered glass vivs:

Thanks, I have been meaning to clutter it up a little more but I'm sick of using cardboard and other ugly things so we did set a date to visit the shop and buy some real stuff, should be going this week some time so will buy some vines and leaves and more cork hides |

Hi Kelfezond
Not that you need to be taking advice from a newbie like me, but if my experience of 2 weeks helps any, then great!
Like you, I wanted a more rugged look to my son's viv and didn't fancy too many toilet roll tubes and old cereal packets... this was a birthday present after all, so in his very small viv, I managed to squeeze in an Exo-Terra reptile hide and a snake cave (both medium) as well as a branch and lots of fake leaves.
Here's the thing: in the first week, we don't think Kate the snake knew about her snake cave in the cool end, and consequently spent the day time holed up in her reptile hide in the hot part or roaming around at nightfall, seemingly looking for a way out. If there had been things to fall off, she probably would have, and she did fall off the fake leaves a couple of times in the early days.
However, mid way through week 2, she found the cave and very rarely came out. She had her first feed on Saturday and we haven't seen her since - she's in the cave and seems to love it, I guess. We've lifted the lid just to make sure she's OK, but no roaming at dusk now.
The lid of the cave was a bit of a pain at first as she kept knocking it off (she frightened herself and us doing so once) but we fashioned a fix using velcro at the weekend (I can post piccies if you'd like to see what we did!) and now she's as snug as a bug.
Perhaps something like this might help Diablo?
Just a thought.

No worries - have this one for now... not sure how much it helps, sorry.

I'll try to put the cave up at the weekend but, since it's currently occupied, you might have to be patient!
I'm sure you've seen these yourself but, just in case:
Reptile hide is this one: http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/exo-terra-reptile-cave.html
Snake cave is this one: http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/exo-terra-snake-cave.html
In our viv, the cave is on the right, hide on the left with a branch inbetween. And it's a 18 x 15 x 15 viv. I was surprised by the recommendation of such a small viv but I just followed the breeder's suggestion (after asking lots of questions) and he was dead right!
Cheers
Steve

The cave is pretty cool!
I'll buy some more hides tomorrow when I get their rats, only thing I really dislike is that plastic foliage stuff I'll try to find an alternative I just dislike how it feels xD Im sure the snakes don't mind but meh, they don't have to touch it I do lol |
