Hi dudes!

I have just taken a gorgeous little royal off a friend of a friend who wasn't looking after him properly...
He is soooo tiny I need some advise on how to bulk him up a nit...he is 20 months old, 2.5 foot long and 198g!!
I feed my other snakes every Sunday but do I need to feed him more to bulk him up?! Any advice is very gratefully received...
Cheers guys!!

If he's under fed you won't want to feed him too much too quick as his stomach will still be shrunken, I'd feed him once a week on an appropriate sized rat then step it up to once every 5 days when he hits about 300g

Hi, Marvolo, your little guy's not alone. I keep reading about royals who seem to be very undersized, for whatever reason. Sometimes they have been underfed, sometimes fed but on what is sometimes called a 'shop maintenance' diet, which is adequate but doesn't cater for the individual snake. Some, I surmise, just are small, like some people.

However, it's true that your royal is very small. I don't think 'power feeding' is the way forward though; I like Blackecho's feeding chart, which recommends that a snake 0-400g should be fed every 5 days, and on prey 10/15% of its bodyweight.

If he will eat rats, so much the better - they have much more nutrition than mice.

Spring is coming - he'll start putting on weight!

good luck!

Hi, Kelfezond, we overlapped - I still like BE's feeding chart though.

All good advise, don't 'bulk' it up as has already been said, the snake's body will not be used to it. Is the snake visibly underweight? - i.e. shapted like a Toblerone or just small?

Thank you so much you guys!
He won't eat rats at the mo he will only take mice but I hope he will take a rat one day! He isn't really visibly underweight, he is pretty chunky really for the size he is, I can't see him bones or anything :)
That chart for feeding is brilliant thank you!

Toblerone or not Toblerone ...that is the question ...

Sorry,Marvolo, this is hijacking your thread somewhat!

But, yes, an underweight snake, if you can visualise its cross-section, would resemble a Toblerone, a snake of normal weight in cross section would resemble a mars bar ...dare I wispa it ...

Yes, you are allowed to snicker!
