They came out of their burmation the other week and so I gave them a nice warm bath and took some photos. Thought people might like to see them?

Kissing : )

Threesome...

Actually they like to 'lick' the water off eachother.

And my biggest snail, named Guylian...

Just me and my zoo.

Aww, they are BEAUTIFUL ...

I do like snails. It breaks my heart to have to kill the garden variety, and once I even carried an interesting tabby coloured slug down the street to some wasteland, it was too pretty to kill though I'm less sentimental about slugs.

I once looked into keeping these, but what bothers me is the population explosion (are they hermaphrodite?) A pity to let them go through all the egg laying and then destroy the eggs, though I expect you'd have to if you didn't want to be overrun with gallons of GALS!

Ohhhh dear ....I'm beginning to formulate plans to keep a Hogg Island Boa and now I'm thinking about the spare 60l fishtank in the cellar ... would that be suitable for a couple of GALS? Even got spare heatmats/stats if needed ...

Just off to google ...again!

Yeah, they're hermaphrodites (C&Ped that 'cause no way do I know how to spell it!) but can actually change from one sex to another depending on what the balence is. For instance, if I had three males and one female one of the males would 'change' into a female so that mating was equal. But they have both male and female sex organs, just only one set can work at a time, so that's why they can only ever be 'male' or 'female' : ) Does that make sence?
Yes, it is a fight to keep ontop of the egg laying, but you get used to it fairly quickly. Mine haven't started to lay again yet, I think it's still a bit cold for them, so I'm having a nice few months break : )

Mine were 'rescued' off ebay, being sold as live food. Me and my mam had always wanted some so she bid on them and won. We got six teeny babies, but three died last year. We don't know why, aparently just one of those things. So the last one that my mam had is now with me and is called Bob X ) The third is called Hydie.
They make great pets and are really easy to keep. I love having them, they live in my kitchen and they love to eat lettuce, cucumber and apples, so they're not expencive to keep either. All you need is a fish tank, some plantation soil, some hides (I use plastic flower pots) and some grub for them. Oh, and some Woodlice. BUT, you do also have the added anoyance of the fungus knats that hatch in the soil. Tiny black flies that are impossable to get rid of. So you have to bare that in mind of your getting some snails. Fortunalty I have a massive Garden Spider that has made his home just above the tank and he eats loads of them!

If your going to get some and want to know anything, just ask : ) Oh, and BATS, if you'd ever seen slugs having sex you'd soon change your mind about them... it's truly facinating! You can't stop watching 0_0 Google it and see if you can find a video, seriously you'll be blown away. Unfautunalty I've yet to see my snails having sex, and I'd really love to : (

Don't think I'm weird do you? X )

Hi, thanks for that - that's fascinating! I didn't realise hermaphroditic snails actually assumed male and female roles. The crime writer Patricia Highsmith describes male snail courtship in one of her books and I thought she'd got it wrong a bit but no, she actually kept them as pets herself. And have you ever read Gerald Durrell's 'My Family and Other Animals'? There are some incredible descriptions of wildlife in there, as well as a snail courtship.

I've actually seen mating snails. I was walking on a rainy day and there were two of them on the path - shameless they were! I was able to pick them up and actually see the 'cord' binding them together. Just hope I didn't put them off their stroke lol.

I MUST google slugs mating - I've never seen that. Might end up keeping them as pets - there are some beautiful stripey ones.

LOL - if you're weird, so am I!

You lucky burger! That's an extremly rare thing to see! I'm not happy X )

I think David attenborough's video of Lepard Slug Sex is the best, so here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhVi4Z6CjZk

Enjoy : )

I haven't read those books, but have been told before to read My Family And Other Animals. I will do one day, when I get five minuets!

Glad I'm not the only strange person around X )

Wow, that's hardcore porn, that is! I didn't know slugs got up to stuff like that!

Those are the slugs that I sometimes find in my garden - and they don't eat plants, just rotten wood and moulds and stuff. At least I don't have to worry about them being a pest. At my last house we had a terrific slug problem and I once measured a huge black slug ... 7"!!

A bit off topic here but I started building my viv stack today and what did I find in the kit? Twelve of those evil little plastic things you had all the trouble with when building your cabinet. If they weren't exactly alike they were close cousins. But I crunched them in with the heel of my Ugg boot, hehe!

X ) Glad you all enjoyed it. Facinating isn't it? Beautiful really, if a little bit... slimy.

I love Lepard Slugs, they're really pretty. They come in the house sometimes through the back of the washer, and I feed them lettuce or a cat biscuit! I know, I'm soft. But I like to watch them eating. I like to hear my snails eating. And I like it when they rasp at my hand, 'cause it feels funny : )
Have you been coverted to liking Slugs now BATS?

I tryed booting those plastic things in with my shoe-boots, but it didn't work for me : ( Glad they weren't such a pain for you : )

LOL Stumpy - many a true word eh? Yeah, I'm bipolar but after nearly 40 years on any med you care to name, I refuse to take that **** and have left the psychiatric system - hehehe! I was a pain in the whatsit when I was in it, believe me (fiendish chuckle.) Snakes are much more therapeutic!

Thanks for your remark re replies.

Zuri sounds pretty contented - good luck for the next feed though I reckon she'll take it no problem.

Hi, Bluedragon, I've fed snails before just to listen to them chomping - it's fascinating! I do quite like slugs really, only not when they're nomming on my flowers - and I HATE killing them.

Very pretty : ) Would be sorry if you ate it though! 0_0

I like Black Slugs when they have that bright red skirt. Red and black go well together, I think.

I once saw a see-through slug! You could see all it's organs 'n' everything and they were all nice colours like yellows and blues.
