Dio's been curled up in his water bowl for 2 days now does that mean he's going to shed soon? He's not looking very dull yet and he hasn't gone blue so could it be anything else? |

sully spent a bit of time in his water bowl b4 he shed. he has never done it b4 so i was worried he might have mites again.
it might be worth checking for mites as they do soak when they have them |

Amendmemt - we overlapped, Blackskull!
Worst case scenario - check him for mites. If you see any little black dots in the water or on him, especially between belly scales and under his chin, and if these squish with a dark red mess, it's mites. Sorry, not trying to worry you - that is the worst case scenario and the commonest reason for soaking.
However I believe snakes do soak for other reasons. I've never seen one of my royals or corns soaking (apart from when Cy did three laps round her water bowl, the day before her shed.) But there may be many benign explanations, other than the dread mites. Could be just down to temps, humidity, anything. He could indeed be going into shed.
Should be more experienced people along soon, all the best. |

Thanks guys. I know he didn't have any black dots on him when i checked him over on Thursday but i'll get the OH to check him over as i'm not there at the moment. How often do they shed roughly as we've had him a month now and he hasn't shed yet or pooped. |

Depends how much they're eating, and as a result growing - it really depends on the snake. A young snake, eating regularly, will shed more often than a young reluctant feeder or a full grown snake. Dio's a good eater, isn't he, so may well be planning to get his tight kit off soon.
ps most royals take a dump at the same time as the shed (although some are more frequent.) When they do go it's humongus, but they can save it up for weeks. |

Yeah he's a good eater and he's due for a feed today on his much bigger mouse. He's very active too. I have noticed he looks alot bigger and fatter than when we first got him. I really need to weigh him again soon but was waiting for him to empty himself so i could get a truer weight. |

Ah we overlapped now, forgot to post re dump then amended again - it's quite likely he'll save it up till his shed and present you with a dungheap.
Delightful creatures, royals! |

I don't mind the dungheap as Dio live's at my boyfriends flat so it's more than likely i won't be there to clean it up so he'll have to do it I hope i'm there to see him shed though. The fun i'm going to have with the skin at work. |

Dio's been checked over by the OH and he says no mites so hopefully Dio should be shedding soon. |

There were no black dots in the water either so it looks like he doesn't have mites.
He didn't get fed yesterday either as the OH forgot (not sure how as i reminded him atleast 3 times) He should hopefully be fed tonight if he remembers. |

!
I've heard good reports from Blackskull re Callington mite spray; you remove water bowl and snake, spray viv and replace snake and bowl after stated times.
Poor old Dio - good luck! |

slightly off topic, but how do snakes get mites???? if you have multiple snakes I can see how a new one may bring them in... I have 1 corn snake and in a few weeks a new royal (yay) presuming the royal is clear and the corn is clear how would they get mites????? does it come in on substrate, or from other sources... |

Substrate from reptile shpos that have a mite problem, clothes after touching an infested snake, clothes after going near an infected wild snake. Its more likely to come in on an infested snake though, so quarantine until you are sure. |

There are a lot of theories, including substrate harbouring them.
My personal view is that the incoming snake is harbouring mites or near-invisible eggs, which can be airborne ... always quarantine a newcomer, and use kitchen roll or wallpaper lining paper as substrate, which will show up any stray mites - and keep checking the water bowl.
I've done this several times now - no sign of mites (touch wood) - but always be vigilant. |

Most definately the shovel and the patio. Dio's had a bath to get them all of him for now though they are all over the viv but that will have to wait until the shops open tomorrow to get the spray.
Will i have to bleach all the wood items and then put them in the oven? I'll have to get new substate as well as that can be the only place i can think of them coming from as i haven't had any other contact with any other snakes. |
