I was obsessed with bugs when I was a kid, I had spiders (I know, right? I'm terrified of them now) stick insects, beetles, ant farms, slow worms, everything I could find had a jar when I was a kind.
Reptiles was a step up once I started getting pocket money. |

I too was a bug beginner, stick insects galore, its amazing how many baby stick insects can suddenly hatch in one go when you've put them in an airing cupboard and the incubator lid has been knocked off my a dad rummaging for a towel. Was capturing them for a few days all around the house. Only 1 went unaccounted for. Anyway then I got 2 Geckos, they were very very small and very quick, but I loved the little guys. Then I had a live food escapage issue and my Mum freaked out and rehomed them. There my reptile story paused for 10 years, between mothers, girlfriends and a rather wussy house mate I wasn't able to get any reptiles. Due to a childhood incident involving a rather painful and debilitating bite from a rather speedy European Adder I've always had a fascination with snakes but really got into researching them about a year ago, and then in September I decided a corn snake would be perfect, did my research on that type of snake and got one. Then I got the snake bug the pyhton followed a few months later then the Boa a few months after that.

I've always liked reptiles and my OH had a garter snake for 13 years. Decided to go have a look around a reptile shop one day on the way to the New Forest and fell in love with their baby royal. An hour later we were phoning up ordering the viv and putting a deposit down. |

When I was quite a bit younger, I worked at Twycross Zoo and my boyfriend at the time worked in the reptile house. thats where i got to love them, i've done all the kids pets over the years, rabbits, rats, degus, fish and dogs, but its only last yr on my 40th that my fab hubby got me my first snake, a Royal, then my hoggie followed then another one, and another and another, totalling 6 now in just over 12mths! Have to admit its become an addiction! (hub spent all day today building me a new viv, he only gets 2 days off a fortnight, 5* hubby!) |

with me I was a dinosaur freak as a kid, and between that and my dads tales of his time in belize, guyana and malaysia, with tales of boas, bushmasters, retics and Green anacondas or as I knew them at first a kamudi (at 6 was easier to remember than anaconda, and was what dad always called them, as it was the local name) to be honest it was a fairly natural progression. |

I was also I dinosaur fan as a kid and all animals have always fascinated me. My oldest son is the same bless him. I went through the usual childhood pets, rabbits, hamsters, cats. But reptiles had always interested me. Also programmes like Animal Magic and David Attenborough's stunning films fuelled my interest. I had slow-worms when I was about 12 and they bred, but I released them all after feeding them became difficult. I eventually got a corn snake and 3 leopard geckos. Unfortunately life sent me in another direction and I had to re-house my herps. I was then reptileless for a few years. Eventually I managed to get a bearded dragon, but once again life sent me away again and he had to be rehoused. Now I'm finally settled in Germany and have had my first snake here since about 2004. |

I had a tortoise when I was a child and longed for one for years. In November last year my wonderful hubby bought me a little one for my birthday. This started off a chain of events, looking at tortoises in loads of rep shops etc when my 11 yr old son would gaze longingly at the royals, kept asking all kind of questions to the staff who were more than keen to get them out and let him hold them. I said if he researched them enough and proved to me that it was not a one minute wonder I would consider it by his 12th birthday (his birthday is in Dec) He then started saving all his pocket money up and this lead to him buying some cheap equipment on a car boot sale then having the money saved up for the snake, doing jobs around the house, researching, watching tv programmes about snakes and generally going on about it all the time! This has taken us up to now where I have managed to get my head around snakes because they made me feel a bit hot and dizzy lol, still not sure about the feeding but hubs will be helping Jack with that. I have held them, learned all the pros and cons of Royals and now think we are all set to go. I have helped Jack out a bit by buying the stat and also bought a viv which will be used when the snake gets a bit bigger but he is paying for everything else! |
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok, they know me in here. |

My mam, initially. She kept all sorts as a kid and still likes to tell stories of them now. I used to love to listen to them all, about all their personalities and how she looked after them. They all seemed so exotic and different.
Then, a reptile rescue opened half an hour away form us. So, very often we were found in there looking at all the reptiles, tortoises, insects, bugs... and a giant boa constrictor they kept in a back room. Seriously his body was as wide as a mans! He was great though and I got to stroke him one time when they were doing a quick clean out : )
One day, after nearly exploding with wanting a reptile as a pet, I plucked up enough courage to ask my mam if I could have a Snake. I was expecting a "no" or a "I don't think so, don't you have enough?" but no, I got a "We'll see". I my mam's language that means yes : ) So I got a Corn Snake for my next birthday, and I called her Pandora. And that's how it started. When Pandora passed I brought home my Tiger Eye.
Unfortunalty Tig's condition means I can't have any other Pythons or Boas in the house due to it being contagious, but I'm still on the road to getting a Beardie. |
Just me and my zoo. |

was a dinosaur freak as a kid... then always though that keeping any sort of snake or lizard was horribly complicated (well that would be what my mum would tell me lol probably just to put me off!) but that stuck with me until a friend got a corn snake and after chatting and falling in love with her corn snake I looked into it. My mum doesn't like pets that have to be kept in a tank etc (don't ask lol) so i wasn't allowed one.
then i moved out and got my own place, but every flat was always no pets, but i thought why not ask! So i did and i'm allowed, as they don't mess up the place :) Got one corn, then another... and at the end of the month i'll be getting my first royal! It's brill because the lady who works at the estate agent has a royal too and she was the one who helped change the landlords mind about the no pets thing, always good to have someone on side! :D |

As most, I was into Dinosaurs as a kid. I kept a few lizards that I was catching wild in Rainham, Essex. Then as time went on I always wanted a snake, but never quite got around to doing anything about it. The time was coming close for my grandsons birthday and he asked if he could have money as he wanted to get a snake. He did, and after spending some time with him (more time with the snake lol) I had fallen back in love with the idea of having a pet snake of my own. My daughter was hot on the case and found me the most adorable Pastal Royals, the rest is history, hooked line and sinker :)

i had always been fasinated by snakes from a young age, don't know why neither of my parents are that bothered by them. i love the way they move, feed, the way they look. then one year i had some money from one of my grandparents who had set up a saving thing so i started looking at snakes and after a bit of arm twisting my mum said i could get one, i think i was 15 ish. so i started looking through the classifieds and bought my first a corn. then i ended up with a rat snake that was found in an office block which i re homed after a while to a friend. i fell into royals after i answered an add for a corn snake. when i went to see it it was in a right state dirty viv and a rectal prolapse so i had to rescue it. the seller also said she was selling a royal. again in a right state not the right set up and under weight so i took her too. then it all went quiet for a few yrs until i bought sully then a few more yrs til i got cilla and then clover |
