That's cool, congrats, doubled his weight in 3 months. You must be very proud, and I bet he is too.

thankyou both! it is nice to know i'm doing it right! lol He's still on mice at the minute, i got a rat for him to take but it seems HUGE!! It's about the same width as his belly but it doesn't look like it should fit through his tiny neck! He's on medium mice now so i think i'll wait til he can take a large mouse, then maybe try him on the rat, or am i being too nervous??!

Probably beeen a bit nervous, lol. They have very stretchy skin underneath those pretty scales. I have my Royal on small adult rats and to look at them you'd think there was no chance of even getting it in through his head let alone his skinny neck but he does it everytime and really makes it look easy (though a royal eating isn't as mind boggling as a corn snake or some other slim bodied snake, thats crazy).

Work it out that the prey item should be approx 10-15% of the body weight of your snake, that way your giving him the right balance of nutrients and is also works out nicely that stuff of that size tends to fit their throats nicely.

thanks Lotabob, he's due his next feed on monday so i'll try and be brave enough!! lol i've tried watching him take his medium mouse to see if he takes it easily but he doesn't like to be watched! Fingers crossed he'll be fine coz i don't fancy giving a python the heimlich manouvre!!
I've just weighed the rat and it's 41g, the mice he's on now are 17g so quite a difference!

http://www.youtube.com/user/alocheeky?feature=mhee#p/u/7/n1gvE2O89S0 Thats a video of my Duke eating a weaner rat, its a little while ago. You can't get a great idea of his size because he is mostly inside the hide but you can see the size of the rat in comparison to his head and neck. You are the best judge of these things though so its always best for you to do what you are comfortable with and go with that.

that rat looked huge too but Duke managed it fine. I've got some large mice that my corns have so i might just try him on one of those first and see how he gets on, if he takes that easy i'll give the rat a go! Thanks for the advice!

You`ll be surprised how much they can swallow, and what alot of people dont realise is that rats have very flexible skeletons which make them ideal small snake food.
