I feed Dorian two large mice a week when he's in 'feeding mode' usually one after the other and normally he has no problem with this. (I can't get him onto rats) However yesterday he only ate the one mouse, and had interest in the second but would not commit to eating it. Normally he'll eat two a week right up until about December/January when he fasts until May/June again.
So really I'm wondering can Pythons tell if a mouse is no good? As when I took it out the vivarium it looked a bit worse than they usually go when he leaves them overnight. Or have I filled the little blighter up? (I have reason to believe he wasn't full as he did a huge dump the other day. Like HUGE, literally.)
As a last little question, does anyone elses Royal shake when they get excited? I think it's just his head that does it. I've read somewhere about it being a gene thing or something, but I'm not sure if it is that. |

Hi, I think it was probably just a one-off - mine are never consistent - awkward little gits lol.
Depends where you got the mouse from and if you're happy about their storage methods, but I've found that if I leave a rodent in overnight, sometimes it's fine, and sometimes it's rancid, and these have been from the same batch (I buy in bulk.) It's hard to say without having seen the mouse, but hopefuly it was just coincidence.
I've seen one of my normal royals wobble a bit before striking, and have put it down to excitement - unless your Dorian's a spider morph of course! And I have a one-eyed corn who has started the most amazing head weaving and bobbing when preparing to eat ... I've never seen her do it at any other time, and she's absolutely fine, so I assume in her case that's excitement and her one-eyed state.
Hope Dorian eats normally for you next time. |

Thanks for your help, unfortunately he's not a Spider morph, but he's a great snake despite his 'commoner' status to be honest. Very cheap to keep in the winter months as he eats for 6 months and fasts for 6 months!

Wot ho!
I wouldn't worry about Dorian only eating one of the mice. I fed Tia last night and she only ate one of the rats (the other went in the kingsnake. ). It's not the first time she's refused one, so I'm not worried.
You'll probably find next time Dorian will take two. I would advise you to keep trying with the rats. I blasted mine with a hair dryer and that did the trick for Tia. Before that she refused. |
