[blue]Got My First Snake Today It seems to be settling OK
I got it from www.warringtonpetsandexotics.com
Very Pleased with its its a (Royal Python Cb2010 male)
can any give me useful tips
Such as ;
feeding
handling
when to leave snake alone and general care tips [/blue]

| Congratulations on your new python. Do not handle for at least 3 feeds. Feed rats if you can, which is 10/15% of body weight. You will get plenty of help shortly when they all log on. Enjoy |

Hi, welcome to the forum and congrats on your new royal.
The caresheet on here is a good place to start - other than that, leave the little guy to settle in for a week before feeding (rats are best for royals, if only because they'll be an easier size to feed when the snake is adult) and it's best not to handle the snake (other than brief necessary handling) until it's feeding regularly - there are a few differing views on the amount of feeds - say three, that's a safe guess.
And any questions - just ask. Loads of info on this forum too - it's good to browse around and read past posts. |

Hi, Stumpy and Hodgie - we overlapped (but we were saying same thing lol.)
Hi, Aaron - 10/15% of your snake's bodyweight, or a rat no thicker than the snake's girth. A good guideline is, under 400g, feed every 5 days, over 400g feed every 7 days ... eventually you'll feed once a fortnight. According to my supplier, rat pups are 6gm approx, fluffs 19g, small weaner rats 37g - but suppliers and terminology do vary. A shop will weigh a rodent for you.

Depends on your snake's weight and girth - if the snake is only just under 400g, especially as he was born in '10, sounds like a small rat weaner should be about right (a 'weaner' is a baby rat which has begun to eat solids ... aah, but let's not get sentimental!)
Not to be confused with a 'small rat', which is a young adult rat (I've come across this confusion before with owners/shops lol.)
But check with your supplier first re weight and size. |

The shop should have told you about the feeding routine the snake is accustomed to - if not, give them a ring; they'll tell you. Also the caresheet and the 'feeding tips' sticky on here will be very helpful.
ps, the videos section on here and also youtube are a good guide to the errm, vigorous strike of a feeding royal - it's fun! |

| Ah, I see, lol - you just keep on weighing the snake - a good time is after it's relieved itself, which royals don't do very often, so as to get an accurate weight ... if it sounds complicated, don't worry, you'll soon get into the routine - got my first royal less than a year ago and everything seemed like rocket science at first, but you get used to it. |

| Digital ones are best - I got mine from Argos, but I think you can find them even more cheaply on Ebay or in supermarkets. I place a deep bowl on the scales (it's good if the scales have the facility to zero the weight of the bowl; if not just subtract the bowl's weight from the total weight.) Royals are very docile; your lad should sit in the bowl and be weighed. (This doesn't class as the sort of 'handling', to be avoided during settling-in; it should only take a moment.) |
