I'd be afraid to refreeze a piece of raw meat, never mind a rodent, with all those guts and bacteria etc. Mind you I've sometimes been tempted when a handsome rat has been refused and the only alternative has been burial at sea ... (well, down the loo, actually.) |

On the odd occasion I have a spare rat, i refreeze. I was also told that some pythons have showed a preference for the more gamey 2nd defrost. |

I gotta admit i'm with BATS on this one, but i'm lucky in that if one refuses i can usually get one of me others to take it. If I only had one or two pets and it meant I was 'throwing money away' every time they refuse then I can understand why people would refreeze. I suppose so long as it can be done with no harm to your pet then it's OK, but personally i'd be scared of multiplying the existing bacteria by refreezing any prey items. |

Thats why I asked cause I'd never heard of people doing it then I read a post on here that someone had done it and since I only have the one royal (at the moment that is lol) it is just the same as throwing money lol |

refreezing would have very little effect on the bacteria sided of things, the freezing stops the bacteria multiplying so its only the same as leaving in all night and then it getting eaten in the morning, only difference is you freeze it and serve again. The stomach acid of a snake is more than capable of seeing off bacteria if it can dissolve bone it can kill off bacteria. The only reason you don't refreeze meat for human consumption is because unless its fresh out of the butchers its probably already been frozen and defrosted before you buy it and repeated freezing and thawing causes the ice crystals to destroy the meat, it would taste funny and have a different texture eventually. Snakes are known to scavenge (we feed them dead animals, any other proof needed) so a bit of a gammy rat would do them no harm unless its inflated like a football from the gases released in decomp then you've got a different ballgame and potentially harmful toxins! |

Yeah, I knew corns would eat carrion, but the thing is, with bacteria, we just don't know how far it's advanced, especially if the rodent's been slowly defrosting and then left in a warm viv for a time. As far as I understand it, with freezing, yes, it suspends decay, but then, once defrosted, the process of decomposition speeds up, so ... well, I'm lucky to have cheap rodents and to be able to (usually) arrange for the days for doubtful feeders to pass on their refused meal to a reliable taker. Do hate wasting anything though! |

I don't refreeze, purely because all my animals get the best of the best. But if done in the right circumstances its no more dangerous than us cooking a chicken. |

Microwave?? Oh no - far too complicated. Microwave is haute cuisine. Not for the likes of us bad cooks.
Umm, could be you're not a bold enough bad cook to approach the hostile cornflake packet yet, but never fear. There is an alternative. The chip shop. Just remember to say 'wrapped up, please,' and you've cracked it. Well, there is the hazard of garnishing the stuff with salt and vinegar once you get it home. Garnish - very technical term. But what the hell - be adventurous!
Bon appetit!
