Hi guys I've been toying with the idea of a new viv design specifically for royals and was wondering if it would be safe to use a heat mat as a primary heat source (in a confined space)above a royal? I know that it's unsafe for adults to be on top of a heat mat, so won't be doing that but what about the royal being underneath it just as they would a heat lamp? All and any thought grately accepted (as long as there are clean decent and legal lol)

Sorry guys I should have said that it's going to be in an enclosed space so I was working on the same principle as a home made incubator but never thought of a rep radiator just out of interest what is the difference between them and heat mats?

Basically its a heated plate that is attached to the roof of the viv controlled by a pulse stat for best effect. I used to use them before i made a rack system, probably the best bit of kit you could buy from my experience with them. They come in at about £50 each if i remember correctly.
Heat mats are almost completely a contact heater, rep radiators radiate heat. I frankly didn't get how heat mats worked in an incubator, I think (I do it occasionally) the mat heats everything that's touching it and because the incubator is sealed and heavily insulated the heat cant escape so it slowly heats the air too which moves the temperature very slowly, great for eggies that hate rapid changes in temperature. (my head hurts).
