Hey guys

Does anyone know if there is a good exotics shop anywhere near oxford? I'm looking to pick up a royal but would much rather not get a mail-order snake! This'll be a first snake, but have had bearded dragons (sod's law BOTH vivs are too big to be re-used!). I know the viv and everything will probably be cheaper online though, so does anyone have a reputable UK website that will have everything i need?

I pretty much need everything. I'm not planning on using a heat mat but will be using a ceramic heater. Is it ok for one end of the viv to have no mat or heater?

Thanks!

Hi, yes as Bob says, those 2 sites are good, and Blue Lizard (google them) have a big choice of heating/lighting and sometimes some good special offers - a good idea to shop around. BL do livestock too; £15 for couriering; I've had a corn and gopher snake from them and been very pleased, but I understand needing to see the snake in person first.

In my own experience with online suppliers, pricewise, I'd say BL for heating/lighting and SPS for vivs and hides and plants, but other people may have other suggestions.

You need a cool end (26c) for a royal, so yes, you'd have just the one heating source in the warm end (32c.) And infra red or ceramic heat emitting bulbs, guarded and statted, are much better for royals than heatmats, so you're making the right choice.

All the best.

I'm just doing all the adding up to see how much this is all going to cost, so trying to think of what i need. Thanks for reminding me about a heat guard!

Make a shopping list then add an extra £100 column and label it ooh pretty stuff, that would look nice in the vivarium.

I think My Royal setup in total was about £200 give or take and then the constant changes and additions, new hides, bulbs galore, then maybe £300 tops. Though you could do it much cheaper if you shop around and buy sensibly.

Yeah, that's what i've done. I just made a rough draft of the budget and got to about £200 without decorations for the viv. Then I thought i'd best add another £200 just in case i forgot something important.

Anyone know a really rough price of how much a normal royal will be? I've looked at morphs but want to do a lot more research before I can justify spending that much to myself lol.

One thing I have just thought about is the effect of the ceramic heater on my electric billl. Is there an epic change, or not much difference? I already have a Bosc that hates her lights being turned off, but i'd imagine ceramics are cheaper because no light, is this true?

I barely notice the added electricity and I have three.

A normal can go for anything from £30 (I seen it with my own eyes) to £100 (I paid this for Duke, full history feeding record etc, worth it)

Oh good, the grumpy bosc can continue hogging the electric then!

It's sad that these animals are cheap enough for any impulsive idiot to buy without a clue =[
I've been looking at breeders near me but there doesn't seem to be much.

Hi Danny,
I dont find much difference in the electric untill i got boris and made a very big viv which takes more to heat, still not much worse tho. Better to have the higher wattage as they are more efficient. I've emailed you by the way.

Thanks sandi. I didn't get your email yet, but maybe hotmail is just slow today.

I'm having problems with figuring out heat guards, do i have to get a specific one to my viv or heater or what?

Ceramic lamps can be longer than bulbs, depending on the type you use, so once you have a lamp, buy a guard that fits over it leaving a space between it and the lamp of about an inch. Because of the extra hanging space needed by the ceramic lamp the guard you need will be the tallest. Hope that made sense?

Yeah that's much clearer, cheers sandi. I was going to order the lot online all together, but there's always something that won't play ball haha.

Hi Danny if you no longer have your dragons but still have there viv's you could always convert them to suit your royal/royals lol I've a dragon so I'll assume your viv was a 4x2x2? so you could put in a false bottom so that it's between 15 and 18 inches high then put in two partions which would give youthree cuboids that measure 24x13x15/18 inches this would give you enough room for 3 royals for a least a year to 18 months, and you could use the space under the false bottom to hide wires, stat and other bits and bobs lol whilst taking no more room up than is already taken..

Edit Or you could just divide them in two and realy pack them out with plenty of hidey holes and they would be big enough to house them till they depart this mortal coil.........
