Your digital one should be monitoring the hot end, put it as close to the heat mat as possible while keeping it inside the faun, basically under the substrate but there will only be a VERY thin layer of substrate in the hot end.

Do you use a thermostat? (Thermostats control the temperature of the heat source, thermometers measure the temperature only).

The best place for your dial thermometer is in the bin, they are totally useless, fauns don't fair much better in my opinion (for royals anyway).

???

Thermostat! http://www.eurorep.net/habistat/matstat.htm or http://www.justreptilesupplies.co.uk/microclimate-ministat-mat-stat-100w.html

You need a thermoSTAT to control your heat source, those links above are thermostats, do you have one?

You really do need one, or the heat mat can heat up to whatever temperature it feels like. I tested a 7 watt heat mat without a stat and it hit 37 degrees centigrade in 20 minutes and was still climbing when I decided it might start causing damage to the mat if I continued the experiment, far too hot, even for a Royal. So your shopping list has just grown, get yourself another digital thermometer, and a thermostat. Just out of interest take the digital thermometer you have doing nothing in the cool end under the substrate and put it in the hot end under the substrate and give it half an hour, see what temperature your hot end is hitting, its really important to know, if its over 35 degrees you have a problem.

Probably just wanted put back down to go to the toilet. Though they are very head shy, did you get too close to the head?

Those white balls are urates, snakes don't waste water so they dry out their wee before passing it, some are huge and you wonder how it ever gets out.

Without seeing it, its hard to say why he was moving his head but its probably just a royal wobble, it happens when they get over stimulated (I think).
