I put an extra cave in georges faunarium yesterday, 1 for the cold side and 1 in the warm side. the problem is, he only seems to go in the cold 1. whilst handling he was very cold but still happy.
does this indicate a problem? he is looking a little dull so maybe coming into shed
the temp on the warm side is 30 degrees c, maybe too warm? |

Yeah, been there, done that - bought a starter viv with heat mat AND heat light ... Shops, eh??
Luckily then found forums, especially this forum, and realised in time that the shop was talking(censored) ...
You're thinking along the right lines. Heatmats are okay under rubs as the air space prevents thermal blocking, but as they have to be put inside vivs, no good for heavy bodied snakes like royals above a very young age, even when statted.
You've come to the right place for info - saved me from making loads of mistakes.
amendment - realise you're using a faun, which is okay sitting on heatmat(better than my awful starter viv) though come winter a faun won't be good at keeping heat in, and a viv with IR heat will be ideal. |

The heat mat is under the faunarium not in it so hopefully not so bad. the shop i got him from was a reptile shop not a standard pet shop so they should no what they are doing lol. and he is only very young yet.
what age would you guys and girls suggest moving him into a bigger pad? 3 foot il be getting, and will a stated IR light on its own be a good heat source |

Why? All of mine do great in rub's and on heat mats. Temps are perfect. Mats and cables are how racks are heated. As long as the heat mat is outside of the enclosure and the ambient temp is regulated everything is perfect. As bats and Bob said go for 26 ambient and 32 hot spot. My mats cover between a third to half of the rub's length. |

only time heatmats are a 'no no' with royals is in vivs where they can make direct contact with the mat, which can cause thermal blocking to occur and lead to a burnt snake, under rubs/fauns they're not a problem. |
