Hello!
I've noticed a few of my snakes struggle to get past the forelegs of a rat, probably due to the fact they stick out and in the opposite direction. Sometimes i've had snakes strike, coil, begin eating then just give up at the front legs.
Would it be viable to break these legs before feeding so they're not so resistance to the snake or would this not help?

i have pulled the legs off before as bow and bullet have a thing for striking at the front legs, and then eat the leg, and cannot get round the head, but i have also broken the legs and pulled them back so there not in the way  |

haha, it was just so annoying that they both were trying to eat the legs, so pulled and twisted them off
eeuuughhhhh, i wouldn't even go near a spider, let alone pull the legs off one  |

| I dislocate the front legs for my corn snake he has a lot of trouble getting them pointing backwards so I give him a helping hand. |

When I bought Saada, her previous owner told me to cut the tail off the rat. I confess I was a bit sceptical about this - in fact I thought the cut end would attract her to start from the wrong end, but after seeing her mess about with the tail for ages, I removed the rat, docked the poor creature's tail with scissors, returned it to spoilt madam, and she ate.
When Shahi emerged from his fast he got hopelessly tangled up with the tail and back legs of a smallish mouse ...this was to my advantage as I craftily offered him a rat as an alternative; he struck, and I got him started on rats. One day he took a rat ass-first and got hopelessly tangled up with the tail and back legs and I had to remove those before he would eat the rat. Pampered or what?
Nowadays, reluctantly, I snip the tails off Shahi's and Saada's rats, though it goes against the grain to remove these valuable bits of roughage, that any self-respecting snake ought to cope with.
Front legs haven't been quite so much of a problem, though sometimes they've taken ages to go down. If a snake had a problem I think I'd do like Bob, dislocate them. I'd partially sever them with scissors in the armpit area, a bit like jointing chicken, so that they waggled freely (charming way of putting it, hope no-one's eating their lunch lol.)
OMG - I fed Saada today - and forgot the rat's tail! Well, it's disappeared ...he he ... |

My Boa has a novel way of avoiding the legs and tail of her dinner.

Got to admit cerberus is the same although he manages in the end he doesn't half fanny about around the front legs so I've got to admit I've toyed with the idea of cutting them off myself although if I did feeding time wouldn't be anywhere near as funny  |

| Lmao there is that, something does strike me as funny when your snake gets frustrated with the legs, diablo is the worse for me he gives up when the legs stop him and he just throws the rat around like a dog with a toy |

I have to share this story of getting stuck while eating. It probably says more about me and my mind of filth but I was in stitches laughing at poor Sanke she was at this for about 10 minutes, no chance of it ever been swallowed like this but it paints quite a picture.
As you can tell Sanke is the one who gets into scrapes with her food all the time, my corn is clever enough to know how its done and Duke eats in private. |
